My prepaid account was disconnected today

As other users have experienced, my att prepaid account was also randomly disconnected this evening. I had paid for the month recently but received an email stating that my email and phone number were no longer associated. Very frustrating.

@BrandieMathews @connor4714

I won't pretend to be an expert on any of this.

My experience is with getting international devices that I purchased from third party vendors compatible with the network.

And what I'm asking/suggesting may not necessarily have anything to do with why your service was suspended.

What are the exact makes and models of your phones?

Ex: Samsung Galaxy A51 SM-A515F/DSN

(That's a model number for an international 4G  variant of a Galaxy A51)

At&t was supposed to be doing a suspension of all accounts on May 3/4, with phones that they deemed incompatible with the network.

If your device isn't one of the exact make and model numbers on the whitelist At&t created... they will not allow your phone to work on the network.

The easiest/safest way to guarantee service from At&t is to buy a phone from the whitelist.

There are workarounds that you can do to try to keep the phone you have (that's what I am doing  personally - my phone is a international Samsung Galaxy A70), but that's up to you.

You can also try changing carriers, Tmobile doesn't appear to have the same requirements/restrictions as At&t.

@nicolas

Thanks for the explanation!

Can you explain what the workaround is that you did with your phone? (I want to try the same thing if it's possible)

I spoke to at&t and this is what they told me as well. I recently purchased my Cubot King Kong 7, so o definitely don't want to buy a new phone. I'm going to switch to TMobile today. They said I can keep my number and my phone is compatible with their network

Same with my husband and we figured it was his phone so to test it we put his sim in my phone (that's brand new bought less than 2 weeks ago) and it's still not working it still won't let me log in online and it won't even give me the options to try to do anything to resolve it over the phone automated thingy it just says that the customer service support whatever is closed and then hangs up

Yes, it's super frustrating! I cannot login to my account online anymore either. I am worried my number is gone and my balance is gone too.

@hodayx  I appreciate your response.

I just read your post in another thread.

And no problem, but first, I need to acknowledge that again, I have no way of knowing for sure that what I am suggesting was the reason why your account was suspended

I am basing my assumption on the fact that I received a notification from At&t about 2-3 weeks ago that my service would be suspended because I was using an incompatible device.. and that I had to upgrade to a compatible one.

I just checked, and as of right now, the workaround I'm using is still working.. however, should my service be suspended, or account dropped as well, I'll post that here.

Also, and I'm not sure .. because it hasn't happened to me (yet)... if by your account being dropped... you lost the account number and/or your phone number to.

You should probably find out that information, as well as exactly why (at least according to At&t) your account was dropped first... before you attempt to use the workaround I'm using... or any other one.

And again, the exact make and model of your phone is important as well.

Other than that, I'm glad to provide any information about what I've been doing.

Let's just hope they have the decency to refund everybody if there is nothing that can be done. My husband just a renewed his thing and he's actually currently driving with no cell phone no nothing a few hours away from home for work right now. And unfortunately we can't afford to start up a new plan anyway if we wanted to at the moment

We have helpful information that will answer some of the most common questions @connor4714.

Yes. Since we shut down the 3G network, there won't be data or voice service for devices that don’t have at least have 4G capabilities. This means that while some device features might still work, you won’t be able to access our network unless you upgrade to a newer device.

Please ensure you are checking your specific model number to see if it matches:

  • Will my AT&T phone work after the 3G sunset? - Be sure to check the specific model number
  • Wondering if your unlocked non-AT&T devices will work with AT&T?-Be sure to check the specific model number
  • How do I prepare if my phone isn’t supported? Shop our current deals to upgrade your device to a phone that is compatible with our network.
  • Curious about your current phones capabilities? Review your device, some require software updates to enable HD voice, Wi-Fi Calling, Video Call, Advanced Messaging or 5G
  • Does this affect PREPAID? Talk and data services will only work for AT&T PREPAID wireless phones and devices that support at least 4G LTE and HD Voice.

You can find answers to these questions and learn more by visiting our 3G sunset article.

Important Note:

  • Some overseas models may not work with AT&T's network. This is a hardware limitation for the device.
  • We no longer activate phones that don’t support HD Voice as they won’t be compatible to work on our network when 3G shuts down.
  • If you switch your SIM card between devices, make sure the device you’re moving your SIM card to will work on our network.
  • if you want to use your original device again, don’t forget to make sure the SIM from the original device will work on our network.

Customers still using 3G devices will most likely also be contacted via Email and Text message with more information. You can also visit your local AT&T Store or Contact Us if you have questions about upgrading.

ATT's official information, with a link to the list of supported devices

https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1324171

It says that if your device is not on the list, the device (not the number) will stop working, and that it's possible to switch the SIM card to a new, compatible device.

Even if my phone was not compatible (which it is), my SIM card would still be operational and ready to insert into a new device.

However, my number and SIM has been disconnected, I lost my phone number and current balance.
