Monthly prepaid payment question

Can I Make a payment on a prepaid plan only when I need the phone or will I have to reactivate?

That would depend on how you often you need the phone. A prepaid account is automatically closed if the account balance is $0 for more than 60 days after service expires.

As sandblaster says, your account gets closed when you get to $0 for 60 days.

Your phone won't work if you haven't/can't pay for an active plan during that 60 day wait.  There are usage plans (e.g. per day) that would allow you to consume balance only when you use the phone, which can be useful if you don't use the phone often.  So you refill the plan with money, and each day you use it, some of that money will be used up (instead of paying for a whole 30 days whether you need it or not).

HOWEVER, your balance will expire, even if unused, after a period of time determined by the date and amount of money in the last refill.  So you do have to put in some money regularly.
