How do I cancel my prepaid account

I have a prepaid account.

I have chosen another cell provider.

How do I make sure that AT&T does not have a lock on my phone?

I own the phone and AT&T was never involved with the phone just the service.

The website is useless.

@Pinkm1 2 options to cancel an ATT Prepaid account.

Port the number to another carrier.  That will cancel your account.

Login to your account and turn off autopay.  And remove any payment information you may have stored.  The number will go inactive when your plan month ends, and 60 days later it goes away completely.

When you say you own the phone, that does not mean the phone is unlocked. What phone do you have and where did you purchase it?

AT&T Android phones are locked by default. Any phone sold by AT&T is locked by default even if you paid full price.

I found that is not locked and cannot be locked is referred to as a factory unlocked phone. If you purchase directly from the manufacturer, it is likely the phone is factory unlocked.

If your phone was purchased from AT&T and is not unlocked you have to request the unlock and should do so before changing service providers.

Your AT&T prepaid service is canceled if you either port your number out, or stop paying for service. Prepaid has no penalty for just stopping payments. Easiest way to do that is log into your account and turn off auto pay

Thank you formerlyknowas,

I have a factory unlocked phone that I bought directly from Samsung.

I will just swap sim cards and do as you recommend in regards to canceling AT&T.

Thank you, I would simply port my number BUT that would require me to spend hours chatting with a bot and then I still wouldn't be able to do it. I need att to allow that.
