@tightwad5 :

I had this problem starting 2 or 3 weeks ago, too. I had been using a 2gb per 3 months prepaid plan for several years before suddenly getting the error message.

When I connected via DM with an AT&T agent through this forum, I was told that the problem is that AT&T no longer offers these low bandwidth plans. The best I was offered was something like 5gb/month for $30/month, not spread across 3 months.

I use my ipad in a remote location about 3 or 4 weekends a year. I can afford $25 for 2gb data to check email and a little surfing spread across 3 months. But $90 is out of the question. I’m in a remote location where the service is slow and spotty, not working for hours at a time in marginal weather.

AT&T has just slammed the door in our faces. 🫤

We want to help shed some light on the error you're receiving, SplitSecondGirl.

Just so we're on the same page, are you receiving this error when you try to log into your online account? If so, your PREPAID account may have been disconnected due to our 3G shutdown.

Beginning March 1, 2022, we sent cancellation notices informing session-based customers (AT&T PREPAID) that their account will be canceled on or after April 19, 2022, if they have not taken steps to upgrade to a compatible device.

Devices working on AT&T's network. It’s important to check the device model numbers to make sure it’s still supported since the 3G network shutdown. This includes iPads, tablets, and wearables.

Talk and data services will only work for AT&T PREPAID wireless phones and devices that support at least 4G LTE and HD Voice. Here’s how to upgrade an AT&T PREPAID device:

  1. Visit one of our stores to get a new device.
  2. Place your SIM card into the new device. (If your SIM card doesn’t fit, get a new SIM card kit from our store.)
  3. Sign in.
  4. Select My Device, then Update Device.
  5. Follow the prompts to update your IMEI or SIM card number.

If you are not planning to upgrade your device, and have concerns about the remaining balance/refund on your PREPAID account, please contact us directly for assistance at 611 from your AT&T PREPAID phone or call 800.901.9878 from another phone.

Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

My device is listed as working on AT&T’s network and is 4G LTE.

Sorry, but the canned response you provided doesn’t apply to my situation.

I have been having the same problems described. Invalid access, etc. No ability to renew the 90-day, 2-GB for $30 plan I've used for years.

I am on a 5th-generation iPad mini, so the problem is definitely not 3G.

I used my laptop, went to an ATT site, and signed in with my username and password. And seemed to buy the usual plan. ATT accepted my $30.

But the iPad wireless still didn't work. (Said "no data.") And I continued to get "invalid access."

And now I'm locked out of ATT account. Nothing works. None of the normal recovery methods. Yesterday and today, I have spent SEVEN HOURS on the phone and at the ATT store (twice) trying to work this out, and nobody can help. Nobody can explain what's going on. Nobody can seem to restore my account settings at all.

I am caught in some limbo where it looks like I now have a "postpaid" plan, even though I prepaid (or thought I did) $30 for 90 days.

At the store, the guy put in a SIM card, and so the iPad cellular data is currently functional. But this is not a workable long-term solution, as I am still entirely locked out of my account.

I could really, really use some advice. Help?????

@cbrillow

I'm gobsmacked by what you wrote:

"I had been using a 2gb per 3 months prepaid plan for several years before suddenly getting the error message. When I connected via DM with an AT&T agent through this forum, I was told that the problem is that AT&T no longer offers these low bandwidth plans."

As I said, I have spent 7 hours working to resolve this, on the phone and at the ATT store, and no one has even mentioned this?

ATT:  can one of your employees please respond to this?

@mflowenthal

I saw your initial post about being on the phone for 7 hours, and was gobsmacked, myself! Since I learned of  my plight a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been surprised at the number of additional new posts have been added to this thread, all complaining of the same issue. And nobody from AT&T provides the simple, obvious explanation: The plans that some of us had been using are no longer a part of their data plan offerings.

I’d love to find out that the information I was given was wrong, but it looks like folks like you and me are out of luck.

It would be nice to get a definitive answer from AT&T after using this 2gb plan for years. You would think that long term customers would be of some value to the company rather than giving us this “Invalid Access” message.
If they have definitely discontinued this $30 prepaid plan they should tell us, or confirm that it is still valid.
