Someone else's name shows up on my caller ID - no one else is associated with my account and customer support can't help

I called a co-worker (so this is professionally embarrassing) and they told me that they didn't pick up because [someone else's name] showed up on their caller ID. I have AT&T service and they have T-Mobile service. 

No one else is associated with my account. I don't share a bill, share a line, have other authorized users, none of that.

Customer service looked at the name I had set in my account as my caller ID. I hadn't changed this name in 2 years. They told me that should be showing up. But it isn't. Another name is. And no one can tell me why.

One other important piece of information - when I googled my phone number, my name showed up in a couple links (scary) but one link had this other person's name! No idea why. Does the caller ID that others see depend on anything other than what I set in my account? Based on my experience, the answer is obviously yes. But why? And how can I fix this? 

I should have full control of my caller ID. If AT&T can't provide this to me, I can't be their customer. This is embarassing.

Hello @billybob7, we can definitely understand how frustrating it may be for your Caller ID to show up as someone else's name. 


Be advised:

  • It can take up to 72 business hours for caller IDs to show an updated Caller ID name.
  • People may need to clear your number from their Caller ID record for your new name to appear.

When changing your Caller ID online, be sure to follow these steps:

  1. Go to your myAT&T Profile and select People & permissions.
  2. Select Show details for the number you want to update on Caller ID.
  3. Choose Edit for Caller ID.
  4. Enter the info and select Save.

Thanks for your response. I tried these steps. Customer service also walked me through these steps. I waited a couple weeks. Still the same.

How could my caller ID change without me changing it? Why can't I decide how my caller ID shows up?

Is there any reason it's taken a month to get a response here?

I want to change how my name shows up on caller ID. Isn't that simple?
