Next Up rip-off

Ok, I've had 4 lines for 27 months. I just discovered that I've been charged for Next Up 27 times. That's $540 I've been screwed out of. Coincidentally, we were at an AT&T (that should be AT$T and shall be from now on) corporate store paying the bill, and my daughter was looking at the new Pro Max. He looks at her phone, which is undamaged, pokes around on his tablet, and tells us we'd have to pay off her previous phone to upgrade, (just like so many others have been told)so obviously Next Up doesn't do anything. It's just a scam.

Now for the fun. I call AT$T to deal with the $540 overcharge. I knew going in that they were going to do nothing but lie and double talk me, so I was prepared. You'll love the garbage I was fed. Once I got to a manager, we'll call him Nate, because that's what he said his name was, but that was probably just the first lie he told. Anyway, after some talking in circles, I'm told that the Next Up money goes directly to paying off the phones. I said okay, then send me a printout showing me exactly where $540 has been applied to paying off my phones. He says he can send me a copy of the bill and a link to Next Up on the site. I told him I already have my bill and I've seen the site and nowhere on either does it show that the Next Up fee has been applied directly to the cost of the phones. Then I repeated that I wanted something proving that the $540 I'd been screwed out of has gone directly to cover my phones. I could tell he was getting mad as he proceeded with his double talk and repeated his spill for about the 5th time. I said ok, nothing that you are telling me is on the site or the bill, so obviously you're lying. He's getting madder and proceeds to lie about lying and repeats his lies again. Once more, then send me something proving that $540 has gone directly to paying off my phones. He can't do it, so he vanishes. I left the line open for another 10 minutes, he never came back, because just like their 5g, AT$T customer service is garbage.

I can not wait to see the generic response I get on here that ignores the entire problem and posts some useless links. I know it's coming because all big corporations are the same, they all (Edited per community guidelines).

Of course it's customer populated with little to no interaction from AT$T. AT$T is a garbage company that relies on brainwashed corporate loyalists to do their job for them.

And didn't go 27 months without looking at my bill. It just took 27 months to find the Next Up charge because it's buried that deep in the bill. Obviously as intended. Don't believe me, get on the app and look at the bill.

Victim blaming is pretty much exactly what I'd expect from an AT$T employee

@Constructive. Maybe we'll get you a punch card and you get a day off after the 10th verbal attack.  🥴

As for paying for Next Up for 27 months, maybe you should read your bill more often. That could have and should have been caught and cancelled 26 months ago. Sorry, I don’t buy the “it’s hidden” excuse. Regarding being told that the Next Up money goes directly to paying off the phones, that is a load of baloney. As for the rep telling you you had to pay off phones to upgrade, also not true. You could still do a Next Up early upgrade but why would you want to? The only credit you get for the old phone is not having to make those last 9 payments. That’s likely less than $200 so paying that off and doing the trade in promotion gets you $800 credit against the new phone.

. I just discovered that I've been charged for Next Up 27 times.

It's your job to read your bill every month to make sure it's accurate. You didn't and it wasn't. This fee could have been removed immediately, or at any time. But because it cannot be added later, a lot of authorized retailers added at the time of sale.

He looks at her phone, which is undamaged, pokes around on his tablet, and tells us we'd have to pay off her previous phone to upgrade

If next up has been on her line for 27 months, that is not true.   Next up allows you to upgrade early and return your previous device and the remaining charges are waived.

If she's been paying $5 on her line, then she is eligible for early upgrade with return of her current device.

However you might be better off paying the device off, and using it as a trade-in. Just make sure that when you upgrade again that you are not paying for a fee that you do not want to pay. And also make sure you're not paying for insurance if you don't want that either.

I'm told that the Next Up money goes directly to paying off the phones.

It does not.  It's a fee that AT&T charges because they are essentially taking a loss when you trade in your phone early. Verizon and Sprint have been doing this for years. T-Mobile called it jump. Sprint called it iPhone forever or something like that. It was basically a fee that you paid up front in order for the ability to upgrade early.  Verizon has not yet adopted it. They just don't let anyone upgrade early.

And didn't go 27 months without looking at my bill. It just took 27 months to find the Next Up charge because it's buried that deep in the bill.

No its not.  Its right there with installment payments.

Especially if you go beyond the online bill (blue click able) and look at the PDF (black and white, full detail)

Every single dime that you are charged is accounted for
