While plugging the DVR in to a UPS is a fine idea, you should not have to do that. When my previous UPS battery was failing and powered off the DVR 4 or 5 times in a 20 minute period, even that didn't erase my recordings.
I don't know whether you have a bad DVR, or one that may need a disaster recovery reset (which will, incidently, wipe all the recordings from your box).
