Re: Home Networking Question

So I just moved into my first house. Yay! The previous owner had U-verse. When we were talking to him during the closing, he mentioned that the U-verse people rewired the whole house and replaced the phone jacks with ethernet ports, and that if we signed back up with U-verse we would have ethernet jacks in every room.
We did, and we signed up for TV and Internet service. Everything's working fine, but when I plug in a computer to the ethernet/phone jacks it does not connect to the internet.
This might be a dumb question, but is the problem that we did not sign up for phone service? We both have cell phones, and haven't used a home phone in years, but I didn't think it would affect the home networking feature. If anyone could shed a little light on this, I'd love to know what's wrong and/or if I have any alternatives (signing up for home phone is probably out).
AT&T U-verse doesn't normally provide Ethernet connections to the Internet at every wall jack. Even if they did rewire every wall box and give you a RJ45 Cat5e capable jack, it would still have to be properly connected to the RG, probably via a network switch, something the previous occupant probably didn't leave in place.
Do you have structured wiring in place in your new home? Any idea of how the wiring is organized?
