Why not just use Microsoft Security Essentials? It's free and can be downloaded here. Better than McAfee in my opinion. Not such a resource hog.

I agree completely think about this for a minute the same company that wrote the software should be more than qualified to offer a security suite for it that works without compromising the performance.

I stopped using McAfee and Nortons years ago for AVG. But I started using MSE a few years ago and I have not looked back. I also use it when I set up or do repairs on my customer's computers as well. I agree with the above two posts about getting MSE.

Wouldn't use McAfee if you paid me to. I have used MSE for years now and have not had a single issue.

And also MSE gets updated via windows update when there are new ones available. No need to remember to update anti-virus separately.

I might if you paid me. It would depend on whether or not I could live off it or not. ![]()

Uuuhh......a little note here. MSE is not compatible with Windows 8. Microsoft says they have incorporated all the features of MSE into the OS security. So no additional security program is necessary....including anti-virus and other malware protection. I've been using MSE with Win 7 for a couple of years or so with absolutely no problems. Now...on my desktop PC....I don't need it since that is the PC I upgraded to Win 8. In fact....when I did the upgrade it deactivated MSE and removed it.

Mine gets automatically/manually updated each day I'm on the computer as there really are 1 or more updates each day that are released. ![]()

Getting rid of McAfee and/or Norton is like getting out of a bad marriage! ![]()

Windows defender (Microsoft Security Essentials) is actually already included in Windows 8. I would say that you don't need to do anything but make sure your virus definitions are up to date and make sure that Windows Update keep all products up to dat and not just the OS itself.

Windows Defender is not MSE, it's just the spyware version. MSE adds AV coverage and becomes a cover everything program and probably needs to be downloaded on Win 8 machines as it had to be on Win 7 units. ![]()

Windows Defender in Windows 8 includes anti-virus, it's completely new with Win8.

Yeah Chris. I kind of went a couple of rounds on the Windows 8 Forum on this subject. The version of Windows Defender in Windows 8 does, indeed, include everything that is in MSE plus some extras (which escape my memory right now). My question was in regard to the daily virus definitions updates. In Win 8 it is not nearly so simple to change the update schedule as it was in MSE. In my case the default time is set for 3:21 AM. Well.....in my case the desktop is only rarely still turned on at that time of the night. BUT I was assured that if the update and scheduled scan is missed.....it will occur within 10 minutes after the PC is booted up. There is a way to change the update download and scan schedule by using Task Schedular but when I took a look at it the complexity scared me off. So I'm taking Microsoft's word for it and letting everything stay on the default setting. So far no problems. In Windows 8, 64bit OS things really do happen very quickly.....so no long waits.
