com email account has been deactivate d...but not by me

Please help! I left at&t about 2 years ago and continued to use my email address that was established with at&t. Well, I went to sign in today and got the message below:
(Your account is inactive. You will not be able to reset the password with your account in this status.(SFPWD43)
Can/would at&t just delete my account without warning?
This is my only email and I have thousands of emails saved that I need to access.
