How do I activate a phone online?

I currently have a non-smartphone and am getting ready to acquire a Blackberry.  I know I have to have the data plan, but is there a way to activte the phone online.  I'm getting it from a friend so it won't come from an AT&T store.  I have heard they don't like to activate phones you bring in from another place.

 

I also know that I need to change I think the IMIE or something like that.  Can I do it online?

You can use this link to activate your phone: Link: https://www.wireless.att.com/activations/  Or you can transfer your SIM card from your current phone to the Blackberry when you get it, and call customer care with the updated IMEI number.
