About to go out of my mind with U-verse modem.

Earlier this year, I switched from DSL to U-verse. I enjoyed the increased speed,, but as an avid PC gamer I noticed I was getting weird lag spikes.Unfotunately, AT&T support was not very helpful, saying my PCs were too far away from the Uverse modem, so the wireless sucked.
It would have helped if the tech I paid $100 to install the U-verse hadn't installed my router in the laundry closet. And since I'm on a one year contract, not only can I not game, I can't switch ISPs either.
I've tried every setting on the router, and switching wireless adapters, as well as attempting to bridge the distance using my old DSL modem and a 20 ft ethernet cable, but if I'm not within 10 feet of the laundry closet I get random spikes of 200+ms ping. I gave up and just gamed on my laptop on my kitchen table, but now that's gettting old and overheating, I now can't game at all without lag or a hot hand.
Is there any way to move the modem from the water closet (It's unfortunately the only part of the house with a socket that connects to the modem or fix the lag??
*edit, why did it go in billing? Whoops.

You could get your own wireless router/access point and place it anywhere in your home you would like. The restriction being that you would have to run a cable between the RG and your access point. However, if your access point is better than the RG then you might could set it right there with it in the WC.
If you put it in a different part of your home, set them for different channels with the same SSID and security settings. If you put it next to the RG, turn off the wireless function of the RG.
