iPhone unlock policy

i requested for an unlock for my iphone 5 and was denied since the phone is still under contract. at&t should be flexible in this regard specially for customers in good standing. they must realize that their customers have the need to travel abroad and have the flexibility in allowing for unlocks in those situations. if they must, they can explore having a temporary unlock which may be the worst case scenario. unlocking the phone does not mean they will lose business. there is more potential for losing the business for customers like myself since verizon and sprint allow iphones to be unlocked even when under contract.

based on what i have read, they will allow the unlock if i terminated my contract and paid the early termination fee. it seems they would like the early termination fee over the money they get from me being a subscriber.

i am now considering going the etf route and bringing my business elsewhere. at&t should think this through.

they are flexible - up until April of 2012 the iphone would not be unlocked at all. The iphones are not the only ones that have restriction - any new phone released that is exclusive to the carrier will not be unlcoked for a period of 6 to 12 months after initial release and there are some that will not be unlocked at all.

Re: iphone4 unlock request by non at&t customer - rejection with vague reason?

In my case, I purchased my AT&T iPhone4 at full price in Apple store in Chicago in July 2010 at USD599. and I had the receipt for sure.

I submitted my request online, indicating that I am a non-customer paied full already, and faxed my Apple Store receipt  together with my IMEI and the unlock order number, to AT&T as directed, assuming Apple Store is an authorized AT&T reseller (otherwise, why would they be selling AT&T phones?).

Initially, I received a response of "Faxed documentation is ineligible or not received",   I had the one page receipt enlarged into two pages for clear vieweing. I am sure the receipt is eligible for me.

Am I missing something?

Cheers!

You need to call and ask them.  No one here can tell why they wouldn't accept your info.  From what you've said, it sounds eligible, but you'd have to take up the specifics with them.

Re: iPhone unlocking questions and discussion

Hi all,

I've been reading through the threads here to get ideas for how to go about getting my newly acquired iPhone 3GS unlocked. I was successful and I'd like to share my experience so as to provide a little hope for those of you still trapped in the labyrinth.

I got my phone through Cowboom.com for the full No-Commitment price (AT&T's definition: No-commitment pricing means the customer paid full price for the device with no discounts or subsidies from AT&T). So, since AT&T didn't give me any form of assistance in paying for the phone, I believe I qualify on that point. A customer service rep also assured me that Cowboom.com IS an AT&T Authorized Retailer, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not an AT&T customer, so when I filled out my Customer Device Unlock Request, I selected "Non-Customer OR Paid No-Committment Price" for my Customer Type. After submitting my request, I faxed my  receipt with my IMEI & my Request Number using Faxzero.com. Less than 24 hours later, I received the dreaded "Faxed documentation is ineligible or not received." denial that really doesn't leave you with much to go on. You can't even reply because they so thoughtfully note at the bottom of the email that "All replies are automatically deleted." Huh.

Since it didn't seem like providing the SAME/ONLY receipt and information another time was likely to change things, I called Tech Support and was finally able to get things taken care of. The rep asked for my IMEI and Unlock request number, I waited a few minutes and then the unlock was instantaneous. I really can't say enough about how awesome the rep was.

I never did find out why it didn't work out through the "official" method, but it's nice to know that they are willing to make things right when all qualifications really are met. I suppose one of the main difficulties for many would be supplying a suitable receipt since so many phones are gifted or sold through informal means (craigslist, etc.). This really shouldn't be a problem, since AT&T has already made their profit on those units and the Device Unlock portal would seem to save them a lot of time. It's hard to say if anyone will have success in those cases.

Good luck to everyone!

Re: iphone4 unlock request by non at&t customer - rejection with vague reason?

It's very interesting that no one questions the legality of this law and policy.  AT&T's policy thistle the inactmebt of this law was verification that the phone was not reported stolen by them or customer foul allowed for unlocking of the item irequest aster also for non completed contractual commuting if traveling internationally.  When the law was enacted that policy was chafed Immediated to a 100% denial policy and has been slightly modified since.  Why was this law passed? It is not legal in any wayou it is like saying that i purchased a purticular brand of hammer that I am required by law to only pucrchase a certain brand of nail.  This law violates free trade and our constitional rights of free choice.  AT&T is not making this easy as the poster is stating, why should we be required to provide documentation when there policy prior to this law had no such requirement, what if it was a gift, what if my documentation was stolen, what if my home was destroyed by fire, flood, etc. and the documentation with it?  Why why, when your corporation had no previous documentation requirement for unlocking ANY phone, should you add this requirement if not only to force us into using you corporations services if we were so unfortunate to simply lose our reciept.  And why is nobody even question how this law, seeing as two thirds of the nation uses cell phones, was brought before the senate without any input from the American people?  Can any you say you knew anything about until about a week before it went into effect, do you know when it was passed? When it was presented? Did we have any input? Who voted on it, are tee we fighting this? Why do we complain and do nothing and accept what they feed us? WE THE PEOPLE not We The Corporation not We The Senate not We Congress.  We neetoto not except these things write your congress person and your senators complain to the FCC and the Better Business Bureau, don't except answers like the one above, don't believe that canned response that u can't, you have no choice, they're making heady if your honest ( rember innocent until proven guilty), fight back, do not accept, do not be herded.

1. check the news around 01/26/2013 for the qustion concerning your comment about the "law"

2. there is absolutely no requirement or "law" to force a carrier to unlock any device what so ever, if you know of one please link it from a validated site.

3. use paragraphs

There is no such law requireing carriers to unlock phones in the US.  Other countries do have such laws but not here!  Should they under certain circumstances? That is a different question and no one from ATT is ever going to coment here about how they arived at their current policy.

How do I unblock my iphone 5?

Please can someone help me?

I had gotten my iphone 5 through AT&T while I was in the US. When I left the US, I terminated my contract.

Now I need to unblock my iphone so that I can use it back here at home.

It seems the only way to speak to someone at AT&T is by logging into a AT&T account (which I didn't create while my contract was open, and now that I've left it - I can't create an account).

Does anyone know what I can do?

Hello guys, I'm trying to Unlock my Iphone 4. I've bought it from USA 2 years ago from man who was former ATT employee. I've already sent an unlock request to ATT filling the unlocking form on the web site but they are asking for the receipt. I dont know how to contact them because i'm non-us resident. I do use my Iphone with GEVEY now but i would really like to have my Iphone unlocked. Anyone familiar with this kind of problem?

Thank you

the reciept they are looking for is one that shows you paid full retail price for the device from an authorized retailer, from your comments you bought it from a private party so it is not a valid reciept.

Without a reciept confirming that you paid full retail price from an authorized retailer, AT&T will not unlock the iPhone.

Re: iPhone unlocking questions and discussion

I have a iphone 3GS that is no longer under contract oblications. The account is in good standing, but the iphone is the active phone on my account and I do not plan on getting another. My question is: if I get the phone unlocked, can I still use my ATT SIM card while I'm in the US. I'm going to be traveling interntionally for work very frequently, so I need to be able to use foreign SIM cards in the phone, but I'd just as soon continue using my current ATT SIM while I'm in the US.

Unlock Request Confirmed But Still Locked

I've bought 2 no-contract iphones 2 years ago from BB in one invoice. I requested unlock for both devices last week but it is funny that one of them is approved but the other one is rejected since the fax message of the invoice was ineligible. It has been 5 days after the approval but the unlock approved iphone is still locked. Can anyone please suggest sth. for unlock of the both iphones? thank you...

IPhone 4 Unlock and different IMEI due to unit replacement

Hi, I got this response from 'Subsidy Device Unlock Request'  regarding my request to unlock my IPhone.

"The receipt that was submitted lacks vital information that is required to process the request. Please

ensure correct IMEI is on the receipt and then resubmit. You may ask a duplicate copy/reprint from the point of sale."

I realized that this might be due to different IMEI number which provided on the receipt and to the replacement unit that I I'm using now.  I got my unit replaced due to screen display issue.  So obviously its a different IMEI, I faxed as well the Genius Bar Work Authorization & Service Confirmation that my unit was indeed replace.

I purchased the IPhone with no contract obligation but locked with AT&T SIM.  Would my unit still eligible for the unlock process? If yes, how? Please help.

No, there is no email address. Go to one of the internet fax services and utilize that to send it

no, you fill out the form with the information, if you had an account you fill out that information, if you never had an account you wait for them to request the bill of sale to be faxed in. The bill of sale has to show you purchased it from a authorized retailer and full retail price. Ebay, craiglist and resall shops do not quailify as authorized retailers.

If you are outside of the Us you can utilize a pay per use internet faxing service to send the copy of the bill of sale
