i don't normally post on forums (as u can see, i registered today)...
but it sounds like someone needs a time out...
i, too, joyfully received my iphone 5 this morning~
went through the process of transferring everything over to the new phone (apps, music, etc)...
btw, big kudos to icloud, contacts, messages, etc showed up instantaneously...
i thought everything was going well, until that "No Service" would not go away... waited... and waited.... then i started to try everything, reboot, restart network settings,... everything short of starting all over again...
until i made a 5 min call to at&t... 5 minutes from dial to hangup is all it took... gave the rep some info, rebooted my phone and it worked right away... and the rep stayed on the phone with me to make sure (test call, open internet page..)
it probably took you more than 5 min to write that post..
Yeah, but, if all it took was a phone call (as per post with 800 #), why couldn't AT&T make sure a cheat sheet was included about activating the iPhone, with instructions specifically for upgraders? Every other phone we've bought from AT&T (at least 9 in this familiy) included instructions on activating the cell phone service, in both a sheet shipped with the phone and in an email. So I understand the frustrations expressed ... it's not about the 5 minute phone call, which is indeed painless, it's about not knowing about needing to make the 5 minute call. Sorry, I call #ATTFAIL on this too.
Thanks again to the person who posted the automated ATT 800 number to call from old equipment to activiate the new iphone.

So I sat here for 2 hours after using the email link and then connecting to my PC. It said "no service" the entire time. After reading this thread, I saw several people saying, "I recommend a reboot". So I tried that. It worked almost immediately. So if you're sitting there like I was... with the "No service" message on your phone. Try rebooting it.
Yep, this worked! I used the email link and was waiting..waiting...waiting!! gah! i did a power cycle and it worked immediatly on reboot! good luck ![]()

I went to the activation URL and selected "Upgrade" typed in my phone number as well as some account validation information,
and then it showed me the new SIM card number and I clicked "Activate".
After about 10 minutes, the phone became activated.
So, for me, it was pretty easy.

Iutnes did not activate and never asked me to do so. Link does not work, gives me error as everyone else has indicated. 800 number called from phone i am upgrading on the number where the iphone 5 is does not give me or tell me anything about activating. And it is not all 1s as indicated. Customer service it says is closed so i can't talk to anyone. And my phone says no service. I have no idea if it was activated or not. Any suggestions for this situaiton? Yes i preordered through att blah blah.

My iPhone activated immediately, it did it during the setup process. However, I did need to call AT&T to activate the line to replace my 4S. The signal showed "No Service" until they updated their systems to turn off my 4S and activate the 5. Then, a simple power cycle completed the process. I assume that since I was keeping unlimited data, I had to speak with someone. The upgrade menu immediately transffered me after I input my information, then the rep explained she had to modify a few codings on my account to switch the unlimited plan to LTE.
Edited to include: Also, no iPhone activation directions or booklet in the shipping box like in the past. I knew I had to call it in, but just throwing this out there.

Thought I'd throw in my experience, it's slightly different than anything I've been able to find on the web.
Upgrading from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5.
- Walked through setup on iPhone 5 after powering it on, "No Service".
- Clicked link in email enter the 2 numbers, "No Service"
- Hooked up to iTunes, synced, nothing else.
- Slept all night, woke up, still "no service".
- Scoured internet, found reset suggestion, "No Service"
- hooked back up to iTunes, restore to factory settings, "No Service"
Broke down and called technical support, Informed that my activation failed because of my data plan. I'm grandfathered in to unlimited data, which was only compatible with 3G networks. She had to switch me to the LTE compatible unlimited plan. Powered the phone off then on and presto, service.
So, if you have unlimited data from an older iPhone, according to the rep I spoke to, you have to call and get your plan settings adjusted.

How much frustration and time would be saved by adding "reboot" to the activation instructions? Quick, ATT, reboot your instructions. This is my only phone so I couldn't call. Online chat wouldn't deal with this. Save a lot of calls to support by adding that one little line to the instructions.

THANK YOU!
This was the exact scenario I encountered. Tried everything, and the first call to a service rep was useless. But this morning, after reading here, I called again, got a FANTASTIC rep, and asked her to look at the possibility of the data plan being wrong. This was it, a quick and easy fix once we could point out the problem. So, thanks for sharing your experience, I expect it will help others, as well.

So far I've wasted 2 and 1/2 hours over two days talking to imbeciles and listening to mind numbing ads on hold. One woman put me on hold when her shift was over, wiped out everyhting we'd done in my records, and went home. Almost three days after I received the phone and I still don't have a working device.
Last conversation was last night, with a supervisor who told me the last person, who promised the problem would be solved within 24 hours, had no business commiting to that, it could take much longer! Double-u tea eff
Appareantly it's the same data plan issue, and apparantly AT&T is out of control.
You know what, I wish Apple would start it's own phone company with all that cash and tell AT&T to go to hades. The only thing I don't love about my iPhones is AT&T!
PS and the mind police at AT&T won't let me use words like hello (without the o) or a common word that means the same as half wit and a common abbreviation used by the likes of CNN and TIme Inc that starts with "what the __". Good grief!

Now over 4 hours on phone, one operator said her shift was over and hung up and deleted all notes, two managers have promised to fix problem and call me. Neither has. Now 7 days siEEC phone slivered!
