IPhone 4S / IOS 6 - using Maps as my GPS, how much data?
[ Edited ]09-22-2012 10:27:35 AM - edited 09-22-2012 10:47:45 AM
I have an Iphone 4S and updated the OS to IOS 6 last week. I really like the new Maps and would like to use my IPhone as my GPS when in my car instead of my old outdated Garmin. My question is how much data does this suck up? Is there ways to limit the data usage? Any advice or date usage estimates would be appreciated. Thank you!
Kevin

I have not yet seen any reports from the various blogs but I would be courious too. I think that the data usage may be the reason that the market for third party GPS apps such as TomTom will still have a place in the App Store and on my phone. All the maps are on board and they provide minor daily updates with major updates each quarter.

The following is strictly anecdotal evidence and is not meant to be taken as an official guideline on how much data is used when using the iPhone 5 navigation option--FWIW I tested it on a 16-mile drive on mostly surface streets; from what I can tell, the trip used about 100K in data (cellular usage total went from 3.1 MB to 3.2 MB); at worse it would have used up nearly 200K (if the 3.2 MB total could be assumed to be possibly 3.299 MB).

If you download the MyAT&T app, you can track your data usage right on your phone

Nobody can tell you this...and FYI, "bumping" your own thread is not really considered kosher.
The AT&T Data Usage Calculator doesn't seem to have a category for navigation. One thing I will say is that Apple Maps uses vector rather than bitmap graphics, which are smaller, load faster and are smoother. Google Maps on Android has been vector-based for a couple of years, but Google Maps on iOS never switched over from bitmaps.

If you use LTE, it will take up data faster and well and drop your battery life quicker, though LTE will bring faster more up to date results. It all dpeneds on how long u used the app for navigating.

Perhaps, but unless it is giving you real-time data usage figures, it wouldn't necessarily be useful in determing roughly how much data is/was used when using the Map app.

Try the DataMonitor app. It's free and tracks both WiFi and cell usage in real time.
