the posted policy is here in support knowledge base article KB414532

In addition, AT&T will unlock an iPhone for: (i) an active and deployed member of the military who is a current AT&T customer in good standing and is able to provide AT&T with deployment verification; and (ii) a person who purchased the iPhone from an authorized location at the "no commitment" price and can provide proof of purchase.

Others have asked but ATT limits the number of phones that can be unlocked.  May be out of luck as have others.

I have locked iPhone 4 AT&T,

This iphone is a gift from my friends and it's already out of contract so I think it's eligible to unlock as well.
Could you please help me to unlock my phone so I can use it with other carrier Sims. I would appreciate it.
I can't call AT&T service bacause I live in Volgograd,Russia.
I look forwards to hear from you
With regard, Sergey!

@getvos - you need to call that is the only way to contact then for a non-customer. However, as a non- customer, they may not unlock it for you. If your friend was with AT&T, have them call. Use Skype to keep your calling cost down. AT&T will not respond to your request here.

Re: iPhone unlocking questions and discussion

I have a 3G that I purchased from a friend.  It was unlocked and jailbroken.  I am and have been an ATT customer for many years and have an account in good standing.  I updated the phone to IOS 5.1 and then I tried to get the factory unlock on this phone and was told that they (ATT) will not unlock as "No valid current or former mobile/account number associated with request".  There was a link on the notice that I received pointing to a PDF to the General Eligibility requirements for unlocking the iphone.  I read that document and I can not find anywhere in that document where it says that you must be the original owner or that the phone must have been on your specific account.  Why will they not unlock my phone?

first unlocked and jail broken are two different thngs, the phone was unlocked becasue it was jail broken, once you updated it, it relocked.

the 3 acceptable proofs are

1. the phone number the iphone had when it was under att contract -OR-

2. the account number the phone was conneted to when it was under att contract -OR-

3. a valid reciept from a authorized retailer showing you paid full retail price for the phone.

So, looking at points 1 and 2 - the iphone in question before it was hacked / jail broken was never attached to your account and never had a att phone before the phone was modified. The only person that can request the unlock for that phone is the ne that had it originally on their account before it was jail broken. Points 1 and 2 reference it

Just to to verifiy - this is the KB in question correct?

Re: iPhone unlocking questions and discussion

I fully understand the jailbroke/unlock thing as I have been jailbreaking and unlocking for years.  What I dont follow is the requirements for unlocking.  I do not see where you get :

the 3 acceptable proofs are

1. the phone number the iphone had when it was under att contract -OR-

2. the account number the phone was conneted to when it was under att contract -OR-

3. a valid reciept from a authorized retailer showing you paid full retail price for the phone.

The KB you posted is similar to the one that was sent to me.  Once again reading that KB it says:

AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances:

  • The person requesting the unlock is:
    • a current AT&T customer or
    • a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account

Notice the use of the word OR...

I am a current AT&T customer in good standing.  I still do not understand why AT&T will not unlock my phone.

It references the original owner of the device, have the person you got the phone from request the unlock, no difference then those that purchased the device from fleabay and want to get it unlocked - they are not the original owner of the device unless they purcased at full retail price from an authorized dealer

you always have the option of calling them back and trying again

It also says:

all contract obligations had to be satisfied and the phone has not been reported lost or stolen.

Maybe the contract obligations were not satisfied, or the phone was reported lost/stolen? These would kick it out, even if someone is a current AT&T customer. Do you know the complete history of the phone before you got it from your friend?

You need to call ATT to see if your iPhone is eligible.  It cannot be unlocked based on your posting here.  Since you are in russia you can use Skype to place the call to them.  The phone number is below.  For ATT to help you, you must have been or are a customer, the contract has been completed on the phone, or you bought the phone at full price.  If this does not apply for you, still call but do not be surprised if they will not unlock your iPhone.

There is absolutely no way to handle it other then calling them. If you phone qualifies for a unlock then you can get skype and call them. To qualify for unlock you must meet at least one of the following criteria

1. Have the phone number that was attached to the device when it was under ATT contract -OR-

2. Have the ATT account number that the devices was acitvated on -OR-

3. have a receipt from the authorized dealer showing you paid full retail price for the phone (in most cases ebay and craigslist are not authorized dealers)

Get a skype account, call att Customer service and request the unlock process start, you will need to supply at least oneof the above requirements.

From waht you state, looks like you have a brick or a expensive ipod

Factory unlock iPhone 4

I have an AT&T iPhone 4 16GB. It is running version 5.1.1, and firmware 4.12.01. I was told by someone that it was one of the older iphone 4's based on the serial number, so my question is: can I get the phone to be factory unlocked so I can use it on other carriers?

Thank you for your time,

Call AT&T and they will determine if your phone is eligible for unlocking. The number is below. If the cost to call is expensive, use Skype to keep your costs down.

Call ATT and see if you are eligible.  They will not act upon it based on posts here.  The phone number to call is below.

There are also service onthe internet that allow you to fax from your computer. so there are methods if you want ot follow up on them

Just call them again. Specified them the 2nd part (in bold) but they still would not accept to unlock it. They asked me to find an at&t customer on some forums.

Don't know what to do
