When I heard the news that AT&T was doing this iphone unlocking this, I almost jumped off my chair in excitement realizing that finally AT&T listened to their customers. More reading about it told me that was only for out of contract users. Those of us with iPhone 4 and still in contract are stuck once again.
I can understand why AT&T is doing this to those out of contract and else but I'm not seeing why not also include those still in contract. Even if our phones were unlocked, we'd still honor our contracts and pay our monthly fees. There would be no loss to AT&T regardless of what we would do with our lovely unlocked iphones. When I traveled out of country several times a year, having this fancy phone found no better use than as a Touch and I had to use a crappy phone just to make calls. What a shame!
From a frustrated AT&T customer and iphone 4 owner.
Why aren't they unlocking in-contract phones? Nobody knows. They didn't explain their rationale for coming to this decision, and I don't expect them to do so now. If you were an early adopter of the iPhone 4, your contract will be coming up for expiration in the next few months.

My 4s will essentially turn into a very expensive iPod when I travel to Asia next month. What a waste knowing that the iPhone is a "world phone."

For now this is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately it does not help all! If you came here a week ago, unlocking was not really even an option except for some very limited reports of success.

Hello, I have bought an iPhone 4 from eBay from a previous AT&T customer, it is now out of contract but I have no contact to the previous customer. Can I still get AT&T to unlock my iphone? Also, when I try to call AT&T USA it asks for my post code and wireless number, but if I give my Australian post code it doesn't work and I haven't used an AT&T wireless number before. Does anyone know what I could do about this and if I could still unlock my iphone?

You need to call them. I would just not answer the prompts and/or press 0 until you get through. Will they unlock your iPhone? It depends and only ATT can tell you.

Re: AT&T to begin unlocking off-contra ct iPhones this Sunday, April 8th

I will be spending the month of May overseas and needless to say I was elated when I saw the news that AT&T was going to start unlocking iphones! After reading the guidelines I understood that I would not qualify for the unlock since I just resigned my contract in October when I bought my 4S. Well, my thinking was that it would be cheaper for me to pay the ETF and have AT&T unlock my phone then to pay the rates for international calls for a month. I called in on 4/8 to find out what my ETF was and then proceeded to tell the rep what I wanted to do. I explained to the rep that I did not want to leave AT&T, as I have been with them for numerous years now and have generally experienced great service. I just wanted to pay the ETF to relieve me of any contractual obligations and make myself eligible for the unlock. I was informed that I would have to cancel the line, pay the ETF, start new service and then I would be eligible for the unlock. This makes absolutely no sense to me!! Why would you turn down me wanting to stay with AT&T AND pay my ETF AND keep my same plan?? Ultimately, the rep agreed that it did not make any sense especially when I mentioned that I could pay the ETF, have the iphone unlocked and change to a different cell provider, but I could not pay the ETF and keep giving AT&T $227 a month for my current plan??

Just to help,I tried this unlocking, Chat with Tech Support or calling ATT CSR will take you 5-7 days to unlock due to case numbers but when I called ATT Business Tech Support, its only like 5 minutes and I recieve the ATT email confirming my iphone 4 needs to restore with itunes to complete the unlock.

Still waiting for an email from att ): it has been 2 1/2 days till now
Idk if this has to do with an unlock with everybody, but when you plug your phone in via itunes it says on the update "Your iphone software is up to date. itunes will automatically check an update again on 4/16/2012"
I highly doubt its different from anybody, but its just something to keep my motivation.

I called AT&T earlier today to unlock my 2009 iPhone. No can do. They wanted the receipt for the phone that they sold me in 2009. Are you serious? Am I going to keep the receipt for the 3GS iPhone for over 3 years? This just shows that AT&T is a very, very bad customer oriented company. Notice: to anyone on AT&T service, RUN! Get away from AT&T as fast as you can and never look back! If you can harm AT&T and make it go under and disappear, do it! AT&T does not deserve to exist and should not deserve to exist. They will not unlock your iPhone and don't want to unlock your iPhone because they know they suck and most of the customers will leave them. And it's just what I will do as soon as I can!
Whay may be of help to you is to call into an Apple store and ask them to print you out a history of the phone, they can do this after plugging the phone into their system.
It gives a history of the phone from factory to end user and also shows when the phone was sold /changed hands / dates etc. I used this when sopmeone tried to tell me a phone was legit and it had in fact been stolen.
You will then have a record of when you got possession of the phone from AT&T.

FYI in case this happens to others:
I have a 3GS bought in the US before I paid the ETF and started traveling around Asia. On Sunday I called the 800 number on Skype and they took my info and said I should get an email about being unlocked by April 16. Instead of a specific email with instructions about unlocking by restoring, I got the following email late Tuesday evening:
Dear Customer:
Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding your AT&T service. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. The issue has been resolved.
Should you have any further needs regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to call us at 1 800 331-0500 and reference the tracking number shown above.
Sincerely,
AT&T
------------------------
It looked so generic that I worried that they just denied me without any specifics. I just tried the Backup and Restore thing, and halfway into the process I did indeed get the popup that said "Congratulations! Your iPhone is now unlocked!"
So if anyone else gets this generic email instead of the specific one, it probably means you just need to restore and you'll be unlocked too.
Could you please unclock my iphone 4?

actually there have been some refusals,so it is not a blanket statement - they will unlock any qualified iphone is more accurate, key word is qualified - and if you look at the press release it gives a few of the requirements there
