I have a touch screen iPod Touch and, while it's alright, I still prefer a phone with a physical key pad.  I have also typed text messages with a real key pad and touch screen one and the physical one is definitely better.  You are right.  Touch screens really are not as cracked up as they claim to be.  That's why I chose my Samsung Rugby 3 over a touch screen smart phone.
