can't connect laptop to 2wire with cabled connection

New to AT&T service/equipment, was Comcast.
AT&T installed service with 3801 2wire. Attempted to "hard wire" connect Toshiba laptop to 3801. Message states that cable is disconnected, it was/is not. (laptop will connect wirelessly)
ONLY change has been to the 2wire device, laptop worked fine with wired connection prior to this change.
Have tried new cables, have tried all the ports, even tried rebooting everything including the cat... Nothing makes a difference. Also checked that the Realtec driver for the NIC card is current.
Plugged a Dell laptop into the 3801, it connected immediately. The AT&T wireless access point device is plugged in and working well too.
Two different AT&T techs and their internal contacts cannot come up with anything,
Suspect the Realtec, but cannot find anything relating to this issue and don't want to swap the card without a hint that it will work.
Yes I know, with the wireless I don't need the cabled connection - but this is a quest now...
thanks for your time.

You have performed the analysis. The ports are working and the cable is fine. You can attempt to roll back the driver or uninstall the driver and reboot the computer so the driver is reinstalled. Also you may want to look inside where the ethernet cable plugs into the laptop. Once in a while a wire will break off or bend inside, which can lead to the cable is disconnected.
