Weird data usage on bill

So for some reason I'm suddenly at 195MB usage out of 300MB with 2 days left in my billing cycle. My Lumia 900 is always connected to home or work WiFi. There are only small periods of usage on 4G LTE and those are always just browsing in IE9. I never ever send giant email attachments even when I'm on WiFI, but I'm getting these gigantic "Internet Data Sent" events(5-7MB) all throughout the month at all times of the day. I can't understand what this is about.

the majority of smartphones, if not all of them will automaticly switch back to cellular data when the hiberate unless they are plugged into the charger, so that may explain your wierd usage.

I had the same issue with my wife's and daughter's data. For a 3 month period their data usage was way up when nothing changed in their access habits, and most of their usage is at home where I have wifi. My daughter actually was charged for data overages twice in one month. In looking at the data usage history, many of the large chunks of data were applied in the early morning hours when everyone was asleep. Again, I have wifi so if any app was automatically performing updates/downloads, it still should not have been utilizing AT&T data plan access.
Called AT&T customer service and received no help. They could not explain the sudden increase and cannot track what is causing it. They put the blame on apps install on their phones (in particular, Pandora). When I pointed out the large data chunks in the early morning hours when nobody is awake they said that's the posting time to the account and the data usage could have taken place earlier (which I don't really buy). I did not get much satisfaction from AT&T on this. However, I did follow-up with Pandora customer support and they claim the app will always use wifi if available.
The other strange thing is the increased usage and large data chunks stopped after 3 months. The past 2 months it's been right back to its previous levels. I can't help but feel the issue was with AT&T and that I was charged for data overages for data we never used.
If anyone has any other experiences or answers, I'd be very interested in hearing them
