Galaxy S2 Update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 - Phone now locks up constantly
12-24-2012 11:25:08 AM
I really am getting sick and tired of AT&T's pathetic service. My wife and I both have the Galaxy S2, and after we updated our phones from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, both of our phones now lock up several times each day. I did a Factory Reset on mine to see if that would prevent these lockups - and, of course, it still locks up!
I am beyond infuriated that AT&T pushed out such a crappy update to our phones. Not only did they obviously not test out the update, and not only did they decided to not push out Jelly Bean, but they pushed out this buggy update during the holidays - when people actually need their phones to work!
Every year AT&T ranks dead last in customer service, and it's stuff like this that is the reason why. Of course, AT&T doesn't care - they rather existing customers just purchase new phones than to actually spend time addressing issues that they have caused with existing customers.
AT&T - you suck for pushing out such a buggy update! I seriously doubt you guys will even push out a fix for this, but you need to get off your worthless backsides and actually do something for a change. Fix this crap IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM! I was about to do a factory reset but if it's not even working for you I don't even want to bother. I am absolutely enraged by this god-awful update. It's clear that AT&T absolutely doesn't give a crap about their customers when they rushed out this buggy update.
This is why I can't wait to switch to Verizon.

I agree. Not only did the 4.0.4 update not fix any of theWi-Fi problems that I was experiencing since I upgraded to 4.0.3, now I have to deal with the phone locking up. My wife yells at me because I didn't answer the phone and when I look at it, it's locked up and I have to restart it. After 30 years of software development, if I ever pushed out a piece of crap like this, I would have been fired years ago. Surely someone at AT&T must have the smarts to fix these problems -- or is that just hoping for too much.

I'm on a chat with the warranty department right now - they are wanting to send me the same model with 4.0.4 to "fix" the problem. 4.0.4 on this model is the problem!!! I'm ready to switch to Verizon.

I am afraid I stuck my foot in my mouth. Speaking with Layla in the Warranty department, they are replacing both of my phones with the Galaxy S3, without extended the date of my contract. AT&T has defiintely made strides in their customer service, and may have changed my minds about them. I actually emailed her supervisor commending her for the oustanding job she did. That is exactly how customers should be treated. Hats off to her...........

I am having the same problems since updating from 4.03 to 4.04 yesterday.
Phone shuts off and freezes (battery still charged) and only removing battery solves the problem. I had hoped this update will fix the battery issue I have had since going to 4.03, 5months ago, but THIS IS WORSE I missed calls and alerts without even knowing phone was not working.
I have had to do reset FOUR times in past 24 hrs.
Called AT&T gave me the usual run around, without admitting the problem.
I told them I am fed up & this is the last straw, I am taking my bussiness elsewhere. I hope they loose more customers from their uncaring attitude.
I will rather pay the penalty for breaking thier stupid contract than be subjected to this torture and major disregard for customers and end users.
Doing the math I am actually better off paying the penalty and going to another carrier that is much cheaper for the same or more data & minutes I get from AT&T. I will end up saving $200 over the next 11months by not completing the 1year left on my contract.
They had the gall to offer me a discounted early upgrade but will not waive the penalty if I left.

MY wife and I both updated to 4.0.4 and our phones are both locking up. They are doing even while using different apps. I keep having to push the volume button and the power button to get them to restart. I wish I could undo it. I really don't appreciate how that an update with issues like this was released.

Since the update to 4.0.4 last Thursday, I'm not only getting frequent lock ups, but my Bluetooth connections are not working properly. I have to manually delete the connection and re-pair my phone each time I move out of range and twice the Bluetooth device name has reverted to the default SGH-I777. (We have two S2 phones so unique names are needed.) Will be contacting AT&T tomorrow...

I too am having issues with my phone locking up when it is idle. There doesn't seem to be a way to know when it is going to happen either. I have gone a day with no lockups and then get two in an hour this morning. I haven't contacted AT&T yet, as I just started poking around online for more information (i.e. - other users experiencing the same issues).
It sounds like AT&T has some serious issues on their hands.

After the upgrade to ICS 4.0.4, my Galaxy S II has the same issue, it freezes at least once a day. It also resets the ringtone when the phone is turned off, and I am no longer able to take screen captures. It did not have any of those issues less than a week ago, when it had ICS 4.0.3.

Amazing - I went to check the order status of the replacement phones today, and both now are showing "cancelled"!!!!!!!! This is beyond frustrating. Of course, I've already ordered Otterbox cases for the phones thinking that this was all taken care of. AT&T strikes again! Chatting with the Warranty Department now to find out why they did this.

UPDATE - Their response to why they canceled the order is that they are out of stock, so they just up and cancelled it. Of course when I said that the local AT&T store has the phones, they tell me I can only get one from a service center that is 200 miles away.

UPDATE - now I'm being told that they do have them in stock and they cannot tell my why it was canceled now. The tech said she can redo the order. This was my entire lunch break having to deal with this crap.
ANOTHER UPDATE - Oh wow, these guys wanted to send out the same make and model with the same bug to me now instead of the GS3 like they promised 2 days ago. This is nuts! Over an hour, and STILL no resolution. AT&T customer service is giving me cancer!

UPDATE AGAIN - because the tech sent an order to send me another buggy GSII, they cannot send out the phones that will fix this until that GSII reaches me, and I send it back to them, and they receive it. Yes, I'm being punished because they screwed up!!
I HATE HATE HATE AT&T!!!!!!!!!!!

SAD UPDATE - I was offered a $25 credit to go out and purchase two temporary phones (that's a savings of $12.50/phone - gee, thanks!) until I received that wrong phone they sent out (probably on Monday or Tuesday) and send it back to them (which they'd probably get by Friday of next week), and then they will work on a solution.
Jasmine, you are a HORRIBLE customer service rep!

Same problem with mine after the 4.0.4 update. I called AT&T tech support and they wouldn't admit there was a software problem. They suggested I do a factory reset on my phone, since I hadn't tried it I figured I'd give it a shot. So, I backed up to Kies and made sure all my contacts were in my Gmail. Reset phone. I had a lot of apps that didn't come back over and a lot I didn't want to use anymore. Since doing the restore I have only had one shut off in two days. Before it was doing it 3 or 4 times a day. Battery llife seems to be better too so far. I'm pretty sure if I hollered more they would let me do an upgrade since I am due in March. I'd really rather just have my S2 work like its suppose to. So far its much better so we will see. On the downside, Kies is a pain in the butt. Took over 4 hours to backup and restore my phone. I really don't want to go back to CrApple but if this doesn't work I will be tempted.

Having same problem with my s2 as well, god knows why AT&T pushed this update without testing it can't be a isolated issue...have my device frozen twice a day from Dec 20, have escalated this to urgent care they promised to get back in 24 hrs but no response yet.
Not sure until when I can hang on with this, certainly very difficult situation after update

Same problems here...random massive battery discharge, sleep of death a couple times a day. But I'm working on finding a solution before I root/ROM it and install JB.
AT&T rep I spoke with was friendly, but acted as if he had never heard of the issues. Suggested removing suspect apps, and if that failed, doing a factory reset.
So I removed any geeky, system tool apps I had, and basically pared the phone down to my most important daily use apps. No change observed.
Next, I did a factory reset, restored my data, and restored only the most essential apps from reputable sources. That looked promising for 36 hours, then had a "sleep of death" episode, followed by another the next day.
Now I have another idea. A few months ago, on the same phone using GB, I installed a Play store app called AT&T Smart Wi-Fi. The concept looked appealing, but the phone became very unstable for about 3 weeks before I realized that the app was the problem. I uninstalled it, and the phone became stable again. I just noticed that 4.0.4 has the app built in. So I've disabled it, along with other useless carrier apps, hoping for a return to stability.
I'll report back after a couple days. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll have to learn to root/ROM to JB.

I plan on rooting & installing a non-carrier molested android rom. Or I'll just purchase a google nexus when available.

Wish I had reda this post before...'
My wife and I are both having the same problem. The phones seem to power down on their own. I checked all the power save options (which is what I was told to do) and nothing is fixing this. I might try to see if I can get the S3 for free...I will update when/if I get anywhere.
