iPhone ATT wireless icon changed to Dan

Out of the blue my iphone's wireless provider icon, "ATT",  changed to "Dan." It happend while another friend of mine called me tonight about this same problem with his iPhone.

Concerned that my phone had been hacked/compromised, I immediately visited the ATT store. They researched this problem with Level 2 Tech support and confirmed that this is occurring in the Philly market and only with iPhone 4 models. Only 8-10 cases reported so far. I live in Atlanta but maintain a 717 area code for central PA. My friend lives in Central PA.

They changed my SIM card at the store and for now it has fixed the problem. Very strange as my iPhone has never been jail broken. The Sales Manager here in ATL was equally perplexed by this problem.

Is this happening to anyone else? Strange.

Happening to a lot of 717 area code people I have a 3GS and it is on mine. Is this like roaming, what step should be taken?

Visit your local ATT store and ask them to replace your sim card. This is what worked for me here in GA.

An iPhone 4S here having the same issue. I am jailbroken but this has allowed me to prove that my phone hasn't been comprised via a prank by a friend or via remote login. I do have a 717 area code.

I was at work this evening and went on the break, only to find that my Motorola Atrix 2 phone now said "dan" in the corner were AT&T had formly always been... I called tech support and they check everything with my network, but did not find anything... after being asked to pull my battery and sim, wait 5 min and reinstall everything and reboot, it came back up but still said "Dan"... Interestingly I had notiiced earlier that i had updates for apps on my phone and had canceled them, while I was at work they had updated, One of those being skype... I Uninstalled skype and the "dan" badge changed back to AT&T. I don't know if this was the problem or if it was just quincidence, as I have noticed that when you make a phone call it asks if you want to use skype or phone to place the call when dialing. I also live in the Area code 717 in Central PA.  Does anyone else have Skype installed?

I do have Skype on my iPhone 4 but I haven't updated it in weeks.

I also am in the 717 area code with showing DAN as my provider. I guess I'll be visiting ATT tomorrow. I don't have time for this $hit. (and I don't have Skype)

I know of several dozen people this has happened to. All are 717 area code and using iphones. Surely AT&T is resolving this... right?

Someone in the comments of the PennLive article points out that "Dan" may stand for "Diagnostic Att Network".  It's likely nothing to worry about.
