I bought the Solstice II maybe a year ago and have had no problems with it whatsoever. One day, I go into my contacts and notice that it says "Empty". I did not delete my contacts whatsoever because they all show up on the AT&T online Address Book and when I go into recent calls/text messages, all the numbers still have their contact name with it. I've tried taking the sim card out and putting it back in, i've put it in other AT&T phones and still nothing. The only solution I can think of is restoring the phone and then putting all my contacts back in but I'd rather not do that because I don't know if the simcard is screwed or what. I'm planning on getting a new phone because i'm tired of dealing with this issue and need to know whether its a simple fix or if I just need a new simcard before buying a new phone.

I also have a Samsung Solstice 2 and one thing that comes to mind is the View Contacts From setting. Do you have that set to view them from the SIM card only, from the phone, or both?
