To be honest, since you're not already with AT&T and all, I think your cheapest option would be to go through StraightTalk. Unlimited talk/txt and supposed unlimited data (I say supposed because if you exceed their 2GB cap, your speeds will drop to around 100kb for the duration of the month) for $45/mo.

Of course. They're just an MVNO. All you'll need to do is buy one of their SIMs.

the iphone is locked to att, not to sure it will work with a straight talk sim. Also since he is not the original owner of the device and did not purchase it from a authorized retailer the phone will more then likely not be unlocked

Again, they're an MVNO. Even locked devices will work when going through them as they're just piggybacking off of AT&T, T-Mo, Sprint and I believe Verizon. One will not need a carrier unlocked phone when considering most GSM MVNOs here that offer BYOP service.

I wasn't calling Sprint and Verizon GSM carriers, just listing the carriers ST rents from.
As for getting the MMS/Internet to work on ST with an iPhone, I've got my lady's non-jailbroken rig to work just fine, as well as the 920 I use for work. Some may be turned off by having to spend 5 minutes getting their phone to work, whether or not they're saving money in the long run. If that's the case here, just stick with AT&T.

I guess anything is easy if you are technically orientated, will have to hand a locked corporate phone to my mother-in-law and have her set it up for this service to she how she does - and see calls to ask where the power switch is on the PC.
In any respect, have a good day
