How to tell if a phone requires a smart-phone plan

It's time for my wife to get a new phone, but her usage does not justify a smart-phone plan. (She does have the minimal data plan though.)

So we go looking for a non-smart phone that she likes. When she asks, one store will say "this phone don't require it", but another store says differently. And, when I try to upgrade at the AT&T web site, none of the phone descriptions say if the phone requires the smart-phone plan.

Is there a definitive and up to date list somewhere on the AT&T site that I can tell for sure which phones require a smart-phone plan?

Would it be too much to ask the AT&T web site to say "this phone requires a smart-phone plan"? They all just say "qualifying monthly data plan required" with no indication which plans qualify.

The quick messaging phones that AT&T sells do not require a data plan.  The smart phones do.  I have a Samsung Evergreen, a quick messaging phone that does NOT require a data plan.

"Qualifying monthly data plan required" is your indication that it's a smartphone. None of the quick messaging phones have that requirement. Here are the quick messaging phones.

if you mean the statement at the bottom of the page that does not apply to the phones that are pictured, it is informational to make sure the buyer knows that a smartphone needs a data plan
