Do the proper research and know the terms of your agreement when you sign up for a 2 year contract that will in the end cost thousands of dollars. You have 30 days to return the phone for any reason. After that, you can only send the phone in for exchange or repair. All this is clearly stated in the contract papers sent to you when you signed up for service.
The issue with "authorized AT&T dealers" (or affiliate, as you called it) is indeed a tricky one, I'll agree with you there. You need to look for a store that just says AT&T (known as a corporate store), and not an "authorized dealer". Unless a corporate store is too far from you, I don't see any reason to buy from a authorized dealer. As you have seen, they will not honor the device warranty, and AT&T will not honor the warranty for devices purchased from authorized dealers (at least not the 30 day return policy, from what I have read). And there is not way for a customer would know this, except from experience or reading/hearing about it.
My advice would be to do a factory reset on the phones, to see if that clears up the bugs (which is often the case). If not, go through AT&T warranty and see if you can get them repaired/replaced.

Just a quick note.
AT&T recently changed to a 14 day return policy. I don't know how or if ths affects authorized retailers, but it's something to be aware of.

Dude I am with you. they do not care about the customers at all. I wish I knew that before i signed with them. <CM Edit - no legal discussions> they CAN NOT make you pay a cancellation fee. They say it is to compensate for the discount they give you on the new upgrade, but it is THEIR choice to discount it. <CM Edit - keep it courteous> try going through the actual manufacturer. Im pretty sure all new phones have a warranty for some time

My mother and I went to a store we didn't even know was an affiliate. (Apparently they have to tell you but no one bothered, money for them right?) We wanted to get new androids that were easy to use and not glitchy. I told them I left att previously due to bad phones and terrible customer service. They assured me, well lied to me and my mother, that everything would be smooth this time. My mother and I both got the HTC vivid only to have both of our phones not receive calls but to randomly notify of missed calls or voicemails, send multiple texts or just not even send them, the key board never stays up while I'm typing on my phone making using it extremely difficult. There are many more issues, those are just a few. When my mother went to try and get her phone replace they sent her to 3 different locations where each one said they couldnt help. That's how we found out we bought from an affiliate. The final place my mom went they made HER PAY for another phone when hers was about a month old. She was crying in the store because of how much money we wasted and how rude the people were at each store. My father had to go get her, she was crying so much she couldnt drive. Today after being so fed up with my phone I went to att. I explained everything and they gave me the same runaround as my mother. I wasted time, money, and gas to be treated like a pest by the company that screwed up in the first place. I still have a messed up phone and expensive bill. I couldn't hate att more I tried. I'll tell you one thing, that store was lucky I wasn't there when they made ny mother cry.

I'm sorry you had such a difficult time. Regardless of the type of store you visited, you should have had top notch service.
