I live in a bad part of town where getting robbed is a common thing.. My brother bought an iPhone 5 only to have it stolen when he was coming back late at night only 6 days after he bought it and doesn't have at&t insurance.
God forbid this happens to me, but in the case it does, would at&t insurance cover me if I lose my phone in a week like my brother did?

As wilcre said it wold, couple of things to be aware of
1. the insurance is actually underwritten by Asurion, att and other carriers just collect the monthly payments - http://www.asurion.com/
2. there is a tiered deducatable on the devices, for a smartphone the deducatable is 199.00 that you would pay out of pocket.
