Another option would be to call customer service. (1-800-331-0500) Once you tell them about your issue regarding the PUK code, they will be able to give you the code that will unlock the phone and then it should work fine. Just hope that you don't need a new SIM card from ten or more failed attempts to unlock the phone to get past the code.

Employees at a store likely wouldn't do much if anything at all. When my phone/SIM was blocked by a PUK code last summer, I took it in to an AT&T authorized retail store and they did little as tell me to call customer service. Calling CS would be a better bet, in my opinion. But it's your choice, of course.

Hmm. Maybe the people here just aren't as friendly. 
It also could be that it was just an authorized retail store - the employees that work there are just salespeople who are there to interest customers into AT&T services and are not a type of troubleshooting source. An actual AT&T store would likely be more willing to help out the customer, I would think.
