AFAIK, as long as the old account is active, it should be possible to port the number in, replacing the current number on the account. A friend of mine did it a couple of years ago, when he started AT&T service a month before his VZW contract ran out, then a month later ported in, replacing the number AT&T issued to him. I believe he went to a corporate store to do it.

AT&T's return policy has changed effective 10/07/12. You have 14 days to return the device & cxl without a ETF. Policy info HERE.
Where is Justin Timberlake when you need him?.
