Please help. Someone opened an account under my name using my SSN and 4 year old address. Even though ATT has my current address how could they allow someone to open the account. I have been assured by ATT that the account has been identified as Fraud. But I would like to know how the account was opened and why did not ATT called my primary cell phone number before opening the account.
THIS SHOWS THAT ATT ONLY CARES ABOUT BUSINESS BUT NOT ABOUT YOUR DATA.
I want to know how the account was opened. I tried to file police report but they need evidence that I am a victim of identity theft as per the ATT the letter would take 7-10 business days in order to mail the letter. I just want to how did it happen and ATT wont give me the information.
This is terrible service from ATT. First open the account without having any security and than when trying to resolve it we wont tell you.
Kudos ATT we have 100 corporate lines I have put a request to our company HR to move our lines from ATT To verizon

as mentioned, who ever opened it has your personal infomation to open the account - they got your ssn from someplace and the chances of it being att is slim since it would be spread all over the news by now that a breach had occrred. The other carriers would have done the exact same thing, if they have the information give to them and it passes a credit check the account WILL be opened, start at the begining and investigate your own house first, the majority of identity theft starts and the end user's PC.
as mentioned,
1. would contact all the credit reporting sites and request a fraud alert be placed on your credit reports
2. request a copy of your current credit reports to make sure that there are no other issue
3. go over your machine with a fine tooth comb looking for key loggers or trojans.
4. Contact your bank and other credit card issues and see if anything has occrred there
5. go oever each and everyone of you credit cards balances and talk to the issuers
Changing carriers will not plug the hole in the information dike, at lease you know about it and you might be able to minimize the damage that might occur

ATT isn't the villian in this case. I do think they should be able to email you the fraud report info. 7-10 days is a long time when you need the police report.
GO TO annualcreditreport.com (NOT freecreditreport.com!) and get the free report from all 3 agencies. Do it on a safe computer if yours might have spyware.
Good luck! I hope they don't mess you up too much. I wish there was a way to catch these guys.
