If I live in Louisiana and want to upgrade my phone in another state can I keep my original number?

I live in the Chicago area and have an Illinois phone number. When the iPhone 5 was released, I was traveling and I picked up an upgrade while in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. Since it was an upgrade, there was no question, and I kept my IL phone number.
