I am in 2 year iphone contract. If I switch the phone to a non-smartphone that I already have, will I be allowed to remove the data plan? Or is the data plan mandatory for 2 years even if I am on non-smartphone? please advice.

Once you call CS and update the IMEI on your line to one that isn't a smartphone, you can get rid of the data plan. You contract for voice service, not data service. The data plan is a requirement of the type of phone you have.

What if you open a new iphone line and before the contract ends you decide to keep the iphone but no longer need the data plan, is it possible to remove the iphone data plan and use a regular non-smartphone plan?

I meant like, if you take the sim card out from the iphone and switch it back to a nonsmartphone. Could you then take the data plan off?

AT&T's return policy has changed effective 10/07/12. You have 14 days to return the device & cxl without a ETF. Policy info HERE.

Well, the thing is I am planning on adding my mom to the account which allows her to get the full iphone discount plan but she doesn't want the iphone nor would want the data plan so I was thinking of taking that and selling it or use it and taking off the data plan for her so we'll see what's up with that. I'll keep you guys updated.

611 states that I would be able to remove the sim card from the iphone and put it into a nonsmartphone and I can remove the data plan from there.

Cool. Please update the thread if you do it and let us know if it works without a hitch.
It works - have done in numerous times on both personal and business - thing is if you do it to a phone that has a legacy unlimited plan, the plan is gone forever you cannot get it back
