Probably the best solution for ALL AT&T Windows Phone customers is to unbrand your Windows Phone device so it will no longer be an AT&T device. Once you do that, you will get all of your ROM's directly from the Manufacturer/Microsoft. Going forward, your device will be as if you bought it straight from the manufacturer (except it will still be SIM locked).
I'm sure AT&T is going to go out of it's way to make sure we don't get 7.8 just as they did with ALL updates so far. God, I hate this 2 bit company.

According to Paul Thurrott (who has lots of insider access, so I'm willing to bet he's right) 7.8 will be direct from microsoft to all wp devices, so even if you don't get tango, you'll get 7.8 without AT&T having to do anything.

So, what are the possible bad effects to debranding?

None. XDA has a thread titled something like "how to unbrand any Windows Phone" and it's not that complicated.
All it does is remove the carrier identification that is specific to a carrier and change it to what direct from manufacturer devices have. You'll get the update as soon as the manufacturer starts to push it to carriers. The process is a little involved but nothing too difficult.

I'm hoping he's right. I saw his post and I believe he misunderstood what was said. I saw the same Summit and I never heard those words out of anyone's mouth except Paul's. In fact, there's not a single site on the internet where that info didn't come from Paul. That''s why I asked the Developers directly about 7.8 and future updates. Here's their quote: "We are working w/ our partners to make all updates we produce avail. to as many devices and in as timely a manner as possible."
Doesn't sound that way to me from the Summit (where Paul got the alleged information) OR from Microsoft themselves.
Again, I'm hoping he's right but until Microsoft makes an official statement, I'm going with the Summit and their direct response to my specific question.

Because they may actually provide great service and lose money because no one's getting a new device. I know it sucks.

you can buy USB Y cables. But if not, USB cables are dirt cheap. WELL worth the price of getting AT&T out of your business...

Thanks for the info, but before I do that I want to try rebranding to either Rogers or Bell in Canada as they are pushing the update now. The only problem is trying to find the identifer values for them.

I know I read them in XDA when they were pushing all the HTC Surround updates and AT&T claimed there were none. I originally set my Surround to Rogers that way.

"They suck" is what happened. They are ominously quiet about Windows Phone updates for a reason. It's not an accident that they are only monitoring this thread to censor it.

I can wait for new features, but bug fixes of that magnitude should be released as soon as possible, right??

Yes they should, however this is AT&T we're talking about, and they suck. Customer experience does not matter to them, only the money going in their pocket does.

I have a Lumia and my old Focus as a backup & music player. For my Lumia, I just want the Tango for more features like sending small video via MMS. The Focus, on the other hand is a nightmare since it has the vanishing keyboard bug that needs to be fixed. MS put that fix out in early January and we still don't have it.

You're lucky, my Titan is still sitting at 7720. The bug fixes my device requires go back to last year. And they are HUGE bugs. Whoever is in charge of Windows Phone support should be sacked. And those responsible for training them should be sacked. And those responsible for sacking them should be sacked.
