Is there a set date for the WP 8 update for those of us with the Lumia 900? Cant wait to update this OS and get my hands on the new tile sizes.

You will not get windows phone 8 on the lumia 900, you will someday get window 7.8 on it, which includes the variable tile sizes and full screen tile display.
No announcement has been made for 7.8's release from Microsoft or Nokia.

According to Microsoft Italy...
The upgrade to 7.8 will be available for versions 7.0 and 7.5 shortly after the marketing of the devices Windows Phone 8. Among the features there is the new Start screen, the sharing of the calendar using the function Club and access to key services and content Microsoft, including Xbox Music Store library that can be enjoyed by Zune and Xbox SmartGlass.

Thank you for replies. I think it is beyond [word filter avoidance] that early adopters of the WP OS get screwed out of this update to full WP8 and ive had my handset for less than a year. Had i know my handset would be obsolete when the next version came around, guess what, I wouldnt have bought it and re-upped for another 2 years. Screw this and screw AT&T and Microsoft. Been with AT&T since 04, now ill take my business elsewhere and go with Android.

A previous poster is correct. Lumia 900 owners and maybe some other model phones will get a WP 7.8 upgrade pushed over the air. That will give them WP8 "like" features, however, it will not be native WP8. The issue is hardware requirements which are simply different to support WP 8 from the core.
The WP 7.8 solution is actually fairly elegant and very nice of both MS and att wireless. I agree that it is crazy that a flagship device only be supported for six months, however, they compromised with the 7.8. I think that the best solution from att would be to simply allow 900 users to automatically qualify for the 920 upgrade pricing.

One of the reasons the first set of Lumia devices were deeply discounted is that they came out just about the same time that Microoft announced there would be no upgrade from WP7.x to WP8.
So, while Nokia certainly didn't tell you, you could have known that the first gen devices were "end of life"
You will get WP7.8, and for the next year or so you'll still see new apps being developed for both wp7.x and wp8.

True, but at least when I buy the "Flagship" handset i can expect the next to generations of the OS to run on it when it is released. In this case my handset is no good 6 months down the road. This is where Apple kicks the crap out of Microsoft. When they release a new OS it works on older handsets. In fact when the put out the 3GS, they listened to angry 3G owners and gave them reduced pricing because they realized how bad it was to do that to your customers. Guess what now instead of saying the WP OS is worth the lack of apps over Android, now Ill people will hear from me is just how crappy AT&T and Microsoft are to their customers. Absolutely outrageous thing to do to people who bought your product. All At&T can do is point fingers at Nokia and Microsoft saying its their fault. Well my payments are made out to AT&T, but not for much longer.
Bad job AT&T, bad job Microsoft. Pay attention to Apple and learn about earning customer loyalty.

I did not get my 900 during that period, I got it when it first came out. Like I said, "HAD I KNOWN I would not have bought it." I would have waited the 6 months and gotten the 920.

Good luck with Android phones. I had one and sold it once they figured out it wasn't compatible getting push emails from my ISP. Tried every app out there and I had to manually update to get emails. And my ISP is very popular! no issues with Nokia mail, windows or BB...

Only one problem with this statement, there are other windows phone 7.5 devices out there, on all major carriers, like Verizon or T-Mobile, made by all kinds of manufacturers, like HTC and Samsung as well as Nokia, and NONE of them are getting a Windows Phone 8 update. You're upset i guess, but it's true, AT&T has nothing at all to do with this problem, so switch an OS if you'd like, but there is no need to switch a carrier, obviously. There will always be something new, and most of the time it'll be better than what you already have, you know![]()

OK - it was fairly well rumored to be the case that WP7x would never be upgraded to 8, before the lumia came out.
June 20th microsoft confirmed this rumor http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/20/microsoft-unvei
There was plenty of rumor coverage in April of 2012: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57415666-93/no-wi
And there was plenty of uproar in june over the Lumia 900 not getting an upgrade. http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/20/lumia-900-owner
The lumia 900 was deeply discounted for this reason.

The Lumia 900 and the Lumia 920 were the same price on contract when they first came out, so the Lumia 900 was no more discounted than the 920 is. Time will tell whether the 920 will drop in price as much as the 900 has.

John also gave an example of rumors that were out in April, which is when the Lumia 900 came out. I bought the Lumia 900 being 80% sure that it would not be updated to Windows Phone 8. The main clue was that Windows Phone 8 would require a dual-core processor and I knew that the Lumia 900 had a single-core processor. I bought the 900 on the first day that it was available. The information was out there prior to the release of the 900. Granted, it's usually someone who is into phones that would look for this, then understand what they were saying, but the information was easily found online.

The April rumors predated the launch in the US of the lumia 900. It was one of the dark clouds hanging over the launch.
I'm not saying you SHOULD have known, just that you could have known. If you bought in April, you got it for $1, yes?

You know that there will always be a newer, faster, better device that comes out. Welcome to technology... there is always something better out there after you made your purchase.
