no love for anything by HTC yet.  The two phones I have were updated to Tango almost a month ago by everybody else.  I'm still stuck on 7720 on both of them.

You can use a cab downloader to install tango (downloaded directly from microsoft's servers, not a "hacked rom") on just about any windows phone. I've been using tango since it released on my HTC Titan.

The google phrase to find the howto is "Can't wait for the Windows Phone Tango update? Download the CAB file now and do it yourself"

That is way too complicated for the typical user and quite dangerous if you don't follow the instructions exactly.  And the instructions aren't that clear to begin with.  It even has a warning: "File this under: Experienced users only"

Att really should be releasing this update to us, I am so tired of my keyboard dissapearing and mine does not even do so nearly as often as other peoples. Calling HTC and or ATT 611 support is completely uselss. They point fingers and know nothing. I have had people who actually want to help but cant. This is so aggrivating.

I did my HTC Surround manually as each and every update came out but I vowed not to do that to my Titan since it was new and AT&T promised it would be getting updates promptly.  I finally got tired of waiting and manually updated myTitan last week.  

I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER HTC DEVICE, EVER.  I have purchased 3 HTC flagship devices unsubsidized and none got updates (Surround, Titan, Jetstream).  Nokia has proven EASILY that they care about their customers and push updates regularly.  I will also only buy unbranded devices from now on as AT&T has blocked features on my devices (tethering for example) and will continue to block updates.

Verizon is getting new Nokia WP8 devices and have promised to support it fully.  I've already contacted them for rates and info.

Not that I am going to stop you from going to VZ, but remember that in Windows Phone 8, Microsoft is moving to direct support for the OS updates, bypassing carriers. Or so it has been reported. Specifically because users have had difficulty getting updates (HTC, for example, updated the Titan to Tango, and yet AT&T has not released that update.)

That was just a rumor started by one tech blogger.  Microsoft has confirmed that there is still carrier intervention on all updates and they are "working with them" to encourage them to not do what AT&T has a history of doing.  It's still up to the carriers.  Also, don't forget that firmware updates are pushed by the manufacturer and not Microsoft regardless so if you're going to choose a phone, choose one with a history of good support (Nokia has excellent device support while HTC is non-existent and is losing marketshare as a result).

I was just on the phone arranging buy out on my three phones and the guy tells me they had a training session with Microsoft  last week about the up coming update release which he claims will be yet this year but was unable to give a specific date

way too many times AT&T customer service or their technicians have promised the upcoming update.  I stopped listening... or caring.  Come November if Verizon gives me a comperable plan, I'm outta here.  And AT&T people on these forums can include themselves as one of the signiifcant reasons why.

Can you post a link to the confirmation that for Windows Phone 8, there will be carrier intervention on OS updates?

That report only states what we already knew.  You can sign up for an "enthusiast" program that will allow you to grab the updates from Microsoft and manually push them - as we are doing now but is AT YOUR OWN RISK as it is now.  But AUTOMATIC updates are still pushed from the carrier.  There has been ZERO confirmation from Microsoft that AUTOMATIC updates will push from Microsoft.

Um... I think careful reading of the posted blog will show that working with partners (that's the OEMs, not the carriers) to deliver updates for WP8, wirelessly, pretty much guarentees the carriers are bypassed.

I agree the 7.8 update is going to be via cab installer. Not foolproof, but then neither is the zune update method.
