1. There's no money in it for them.
2. You may not buy a new WP. (see #1)
3. Not enough users. (see #1)
4. They have to pay someone to do it. (see #1)
5. They have to test, this takes time and they have to pay someone. (see #1)
6. Some features cut down on air time usage (i.e. visual voicemail and tethering, see #1)
7. MS not making them do it; 18 mo. shelflife from release date all 1st gen. phones are out of production. (see #1)
8. You will not buy an Android.(see #1)
9. You will not buy an iPhone. (see #1)
10. They couldn't care less, they're making money regardless.
My opinion, feel free to add to the list. Disgruntled customers welcome.
* Ha ha. Used spell check and 'voicemail' is 'not found'!

5 seems like the main reason - they need to certify it for every device, and devices with very low numbers of users aren't very important.
Hopefully 2 things will happen
1) WP7.8 will actually release and be installed directly from Microsoft, with no carrier involvement, so everyone will get it
and
2) WP8 will have some compelling devices and attractive upgrade options for those on (what will then be) legacy WP7.x devices
I don't work for AT&T so I have no idea if #2 will happen.

Two points, first see #1 in my post. I think that is the main reason, it takes time and money to push an update. It is not profitable for them to due so. They do not take their 'Premier Carrier' status seriously.
Second while there are other ways to update your phone they are not without risk. The basis of the OS is to be simplified and integrated. The original marketing push was to 'free you from your phone'. Most users of smartphones don't want to have to spend hours researching on how to keep their device up to date. They expect this from their carrier/manufacturer/OS when they heavily invest in the purchase and/or contract. iPhone users do not have to use work arounds to keep their OS current.
I have done my fair share of tweaking but I don't think I am in the majority. Microsoft has provided updates to fix bugs and add features to add to their competitiveness it is the carriers responsibility to deliver them. Why buy a product from AT&T that they do not support?

your question is what they want you thinking. That way they can convince you to buy a $200 piece of iCrap full of security holes that apple refuses to admit exists.

Doomsday, iPhone? This I will never do, I am not a sheep. Those who are not able/willing to tinker with thier devices might be another story.

AT&T is not testing the updates. They proved that by NEVER pushing a single update except 7720. It's not possible that they began testing 7740 than aborted the testing when the next version came out and started testing that. And when a new version came out aborted the last and started testing that. They already explained why they aren't allowing updates. It saves them money to NOT put any effort into device support. This is why you need to either buy your device unbranded, learn how to manually push your own updates or go to another carrier.

To be honest, I am surprised a little that they haven't started rolling out updates because of Verizon.. I mean, if people see that verizon keeps their phones updates more than AT&T does, and if the cost is the same, then they should think that they might lose customers when their contracts are up. But I guess that makes too much sense. I've almost thought about complaining to Microsoft about AT&T's behavior but I don't think it would help anything.

I am also a pretty irritated customer on this topic. I paid an early termination fee with Verizon to come to AT&T & get the flagship Lumia 900. Best of the best, etc. It is a great phone. But Microsoft & Nokia continue to release updates to improve it, and I don't get them because I'm with AT&T, who seems to have a hard time figuring out how to push the updated builds out the door to us....
All I can say, is whatever they're doing, it'd better be worth waiting for. But what could they really be doing that is taking this long....?
I agree with the notion that as the "Premier Carrier" they are really making themselves look bad on this. Nokia has lived up to the promise of delivering ongoing great product support to the customers. AT&T....?

And what sucks even more is that one of the final straws that broke the camel's back for me to come over to AT&T from Verizon was that I had a Motorola Droid X2 that Motorola was giving negligent support for.
Now I came across the iasle, and the problem is the carrier this time, not the device manufacturer. I could just go with Samsung's flagship android, but I'd really rather have Nokia & Microsoft.
AT&T you are currently annoying me.

Same here. My Surround and Titan came from HTC. My next device will be Nokia and it will be unbranded from the factory.

Dev unlocking your phone doesn't achive that.
However, all Win8 phones will get their updates directly from Microsoft, it seems, so it won't matter if your phone is branded or not.

I'm still not sure about user getting updates strictly from Microsoft. From what I've read, carriers still have the abiility to interfere.

Dev unlocked, debranded, carrier unlocked, I dont care. I'll even grind the carrier's name off the front of the phone if one exists. As long as a carrier cant get their greed all over it.

dkmort, Yes I would be particularly p.o.'d if I had a Nokia Lumia 900. Making matters worse Verizon is pushing Tango (8773) to 1st generation HTC Trophy. Is this any way to run a railroad?

Which is completely beside the point. A lot of these updates and fixes have been around for months. You should NOT have to wait for MS to push 7.8, or buy a new phone completely just to get your keyboard to work properly. These updates are there NOW, they only have to let us have them...

That's why AT&T won't let us have them, so you'll buy a new phone. If you want updates, you'll have to find a way to get them yourself...

AT&T customer service people. Can we please get an update here? I think it would probably be better for everyone if we at least had some periodic communication from you guys, rather than us all just feeling like we're in the dark being ignored.
I suspect you're probably aware that your Tango update is now available for download from Nokia's servers:
http://www.wpcentral.com/att-lumia-900-os-and-firm
So of course we are excited and anxious for this improved update to be made available via the Zune app (using the method in the above link requires a factory reset on the phone, which most people probably won't want to do).
If you can please just give us some feedback. Perhaps an updated ETA, I think it would be much appreciated.
Probably any feedback would help all of us (your customers) to not feel like we're being ignored.
Thanks,
-
Doug

HTC released the Tango update for the Titan to AT&T in late June. I still don't have it on my device and am still on 7720. ![]()

Don't hold your breath waiting for ATT. They have given us no substantive replies for months.
We know they read the forums, as posts are edited... They just choose not to answer us.

it appears that AT&T's refusal to push updates is possibly affecting ALL users of Windows Phone:

...and they still don't care.

Several months ago when we went thru the same thing with the 8107 update AT&T said that a bigger and better update will be coming soon. Since there was nothing about WP 7.8 at the time the bigger and better update was probably Tango.
But as it turned out AT&T lied. Thanks AT&T!

Wish I could add a poll to this thread just so we could tally how many users are still on 7.1.7720. reguardlees of any other thread I stand by my origional post. Forum members @ WP Central are doing a wonderful job of trashing AT&T, if anyone in the ivory tower has any moxie they should have a read. iPhone won't be a cash cow forever.
