I am not talking about change in technology .. its the updates from these carriers. When the phone companies start rolling out updates why dont they relese it to their phones. Why do they hold it back.
Its not only lumia take android also for example .... jelly bean has bean rolled out long back but how many phones from these carriers have actually got the update ?
Thas y i said this whole contract system is a big bait for making more and more money .... only catch is $200 phones..if u fall for that u r dead for 2 years.
probably end up buying unlocked phones starting this year.

Think twice b4 buying an unlocked phone. I bought a lumia 800 from newegg and it only lasted me 2 months and it failed. After I bought it they took it off the shelves, so I couldn't get a replacement. Since it was an overseas phone they couldn't get a new one. They have a 3rd party repair company and it got sent out twice and they couldn't fix it. So I was pretty much screwed with a $500 paper weight. When I found out the 900 was coming I got that with a contract and I went through 2 phones when it came out. the 1st one had a dead pixel and couldn't type the letters [n] & [j] in landscape mode, so I went to att and exchanged it for a new one free of charge. There's a benefit there. Now with this whole 7.8 update finally coming out it's a fresh new start, and a nice desguise. Don't blame it on at&t for the update, blame it on microsoft/nokia for not being able to upgrade WP7.5 to WP8...

does not matter whether its upgrade from 7.5 to 8 or 7.8 ... ATT will never release updates on time.
we cant blame MS/nokia for not upgrading to 8 because its a new OS all together .. hardware does not support that OS so cant blame them.
They are out of picture. Thats y i gave android also as an example .... which ever update it is .. these guys take there own time in releasing them ... thier only strategy is annoying thier customers with updates so that they break existing contracts (which means more fees and more money to ATT) in order to go for latest phones with latest OS. Thats y they are irritating ... all they see is sales of their new devices .. once sold they never care about the existing phones .. they are forgotten.
Regarding replacements ..if u buy from trusted sources u will definitely get replacements ..i never trust newegg or ebay websites, buy from Nokia through amazon or Microsoft store or u have google nexus which is now the best phone with no contract cheating and all.

They released 7.8 to bring the life back to the lumia 900 users and it's still not forgotten, you can say they cared. It took them a while but it got there. They said it will be the last update to the WP7 users, but how long will it last...

Dude .. I am not talking anything related to windows or nokia. I have no complains against them .. I will be happy with nokia lumia 900. I wont care if they released 7.8 or not. I would not have bothered even if they dont release it. I am happy with 7.5 itself.
I am talking about ATT. When samsung, nokia or any other company releases upgrades to the phones ... ATT wil release the updates after 3-4 months .... that is my problem. Why do they have to hold back the updates is my question ... u r not understanding my point here. I dont care if the mobile is windows or android ... any phone upgrade for that matter, why do these carriers come in between customers and phone manufacturers ... ??
If u still dont get it .. stop replying the same thing and stop talking about nokia and windows ... i dont have any complains against them .. as i said before i wouldn't even have cared if they did not release 7.8 version.

I've spoken to MS on this issue and the delay. Told me I will be promompted - obviously by AT&T because they have released it when they announced it officially on February 1st. I was advised Microsoft has released it and it's supposed to be rolled out over stages over the next 3 weeks. This was week 2 and nothing. I haven't heard one Nokia 900 user mention they have it yet.
Here's info on the process:
http://blogs.windows.com/windows_phone/b/windowsph
Sent from my Lumia 900 Windows Phone 7.5
It appears AT&T is holding back for some reason. It's their branded locked phone on their system, so they have the ultimate final say. From a business perspective, there isn't any rush for AT&T to push this out. If you are on a contract, what are you going to do - Leave? Unlikely. Will they migrate you to a new Nokia 920, that's possible or make it more attractive. I own my phone paid out right, but it's still locked to AT&T.
The truth is the biggest improvement is the UI tiles on 7.8. The other stuff might not be noticeable to most. The Nokia 900 is a super great phone with or without the 7.8 update. It's just that human nature - once we know, we want it and if we don't get it, it bothers us. I do check multiple times a day. Turn the phone completely off, wait an hour, then turn it on again, hoping that maybe that will trigger something, but No Good!
You can get the software update on line and download it, but you are at your own if something goes wrong. Guess we have to wait, but it's so sad that to AT&T, it's not that important. I bet if it was an Apple phone they would care.
That's why they still have at most AT&T stores in NY huge signs outside their store with a picture of the iPhone, but nothing for the Windows Phone. This is why Microsoft is having a hard time making headway with such a great phone as the Nokia and HTC, yet AT&T's monkeying around with their marketing and plans - no matter what MS advertises, AT&T can push it or ignore it.
They are ignoring it because they make most of their money on the iPhone and Android.

I got a replacement phone from AT&T warranty service last week and it had the 7.8 OS on it. So, I know they have it and support it now.
Make sure to tether your phone to your PC and run Zune. Go to settings / Phone / Update and run the update manually. You may get the update pushed to you.

ATT knows only apple .....
And the whole contract system suks. They say $199 for a phone on contract ... people think its so less and they buy and for next two years u will have to keep regreting. u cant upgrade without breaking the contract .... breaking contract is more money to these carriers. ... Atleast do they give updates on time ... NO ... they kill u even with that ... updates come after 8 months after the OEMs releas them. They just annoy u to the deepest level so that u end up breaking contract and buy new phone.
Windows phones are gud and i love my lumi 900 .... i have no problems or complains .... but i am just scared to buy my next phone on contract. Never gonna do that mistake.
Guess google is doing awesome job with nexus 4 by not making it contract phone. I hope MS/nokia also comes with such phones ....

I was so sorry to read your post - I asked - Why?
In no way should it have taken this long, especially when there was another poster that purchased the phone and the 7.8 Windows Phone Update was already on the phone.
Here's what you can do:
Here is how to force update and is what I did on my Nokia Lumia 900 that I own, but is bound to AT&T.
1) Turn on Airplane mode on your phone in setting.
2) Connect Your Phone to Zune and then click on setting (In Zune) and then click on update
3) Right when you click on update after 3 seconds turn off your internet. (you can turn your modem or router "off". I opened up my Network settings in Windows 7 and had it on the desktop, so I could "Disable" it instantly from there)
4) Update will show up without the internet once it shows up turn your internet on and then update it.
5) If it doesn’t work do this at least 4 times perfectly and i guarantee it will update it.
I had to do it the first time about 5 times - it's a matter of getting the timing just right. You're breaking the connection just after the Zune PC software client and your phone is identified by Microsoft, but not long enough for your phone to send/receive any data by AT&T while it's connected to your PC and since your PC is connected to the internet, so in fact is your phone, even though it is in "Airplane" mode which disables the phones cellular and wireless connection, but not if it's thethered (USB connected) to your PC.
After about 5 times I got the timing right and the 1st update installed. That was only 1, there were two more. I had to do the same thing again, because if you just click to Upgrade on the Zune software, it would tell you that your phone is up to date.
When you do it again a couple of times (by now you got that timing correct in disco your internet network connection) the 2nd update will install, this is the 7.8 update. It will want to check again for any more updates and when it does, it will find another update, this time from Nokia. This will be the 3rd update.
Doing it this way allows you to do it the way Microsoft designed and it will make a backup copy each update, just in case something goes wrong and you need to roll things back. There are other ways to push it or install cabs from the Internet, but those I would think are risky, since the Zune software has no record of your update.
It is utterly pathetic that AT&T didn't release this shortly after January 30th, when Microsoft formally released this update officially and after they did their required checking to be sure it was OK on their network. Instead they delayed this update, for what appears to be their business reasons.
If you call AT&T their reps were given a script that basically said you have to wait till Microsoft rolls it out. It's not Microsoft and not Nokia, it's AT&T that was controlling it at this point after January 30 2013.
Let me know it goes with those steps. just be patient following them, it does work.
Good Luck!
