I don't mean to ruin all the fun, but I have to stand up for my Epix again. It's been flawless since I did a hard reset after the update.
The first AT&T rep I spoke with (the day the update was released) couldn't find how to send it to my phone, but he conferenced in a woman from the data services dept and she was able to send the update within minutes. Phone was still a little buggy the first couple of days after the update, so I decided to hard reset. It's been wonderful ever since. Not a single freeze or error of ANY kind, while it have plenty of them before.
Again, I guess I just got lucky, b/c the Epix is now the best Win Mo phone I've had (700w, 8525, TIlt, Fuze). I'm now running SPB Mobile Shell 3.0 that was just released and I'm loving it.

My Epix has been working great since the update as well.
I guess some guys got lucky then. I really liked the phone but just couldnt live anymore with the issues after the update. I did a couple of hard resets but it keps hanging during dialing out and it was jumping between Edge and 3G more than any other phone have seen. It is one of the best phones in terms of form factor and features... I just wish AT&T would have checked it better before relasing it. Im hoping their next one will be more stable.... I am starting to like my Fuze a lot though so far

Just called to try and get this 1st replacement handset replaced, as it still freezes when making calls (even after a hard reset), and they will not do a replacement over the phone for me. I have to take it in to a ATT Corp store and try to replicate the issue there. Great, trying to fit this into my schedule is going to be a nightmare.
really? this is the first time I hear about something like that? Why owuldnt AT&T send you a replacement? Doesnt make sense. Did you call the warranty department?

I got the patch update on Monday and since then the phone freezes at least twice a day. I also have problems placing calls as it gets stuck on "Dialing". I hate this phone. I am a corporate customer with three phones (other two are not Epix) and rely extensively on this phone for business. I switched to ATT to get iPhone and expecting better service than Verizon Wireless. I am contacting Verizon Wireless on Friday to see what they will do to get my business back and will switch two lines back to Verizon Wireless and keep iPhone on very minimal time plan. I already got a replacement back in December because it was freezing and now with the update the phone has gone from annoying to useless. I can't believe I am saying this, but I look forward to going back to Verizon Wireless.
I find it hard to believe there are people on this thread who have applied the update and are not getting a freeze while trying to dial out as you do. I dont blame you for ditching the phone. I did the same. Shame AT&T is the only big GSM carrier. As I travel outside the country a lot, Verizon just wouldnt be good for me. When they switch however to their 4G, based on LTE, things may change

I believe if you do a windows update from within the settings tab it will resume

Let us know how your phone behaves once you did your hard reset

After the 2nd call, the download completed and it installed successfully. On the first try, the download "paused" midstream, and selecting "Retry" from the menu did nothing. Restarting the phone caused the windows update to no longer be available.
I'm still writing down the programs I've added and their settings, so I was going to wait a few days before doing a hard reset. Initial observations without a reset:
• 1 of my 7 calls last night hanged at "Dialing" for about a minute, which I could not cancel. The mouse worked, but the keyboard did not. I'm sure glad that call was not a 911 call. Does the hard reset solve that problem? Other calls seemed to connect faster than before.
• Voice command had become disabled. After it was enabled it would not recognize any commands. A power-cycle solved the problem.
• I tried a speed test - it was 396 Kbps (roughly same speed as before the update). I could see the cell site antennas about 1/2 mile away. Does the hard reset result in higher data speeds?

Im not sure if a hard reset will fix the HSDPA issue (download speed) but will definitely not fix the phone hanging while dialing out. I also noticed that calls connect faster after the update, but the phone hanging was a deal breaker for me

Just a quick update. I was traveling this week (in Las Vegas). Had a strong 3G signal the whole time, but kept experiencing the same issues with the Epix: frequent hangs at the Dialing... screen (although I did notice, like others, that the times when calls actually connected they seemed to do so faster) and similar behavior to pre-update where phone would go completely unresponsive (but no error ever appeared). I seemed to experience these problems more here, probably because I was using data features more -- lots of web browsing, email, twitter, etc. By Wednesday afternoon, I gave up and moved my SIM to the backup phone I brought -- a Samsung SYNC. Really missed Windows Mobile, but it was amazing to have a phone that didn't cause me to miss calls, placed calls when I wanted, and just generally worked!
So, summary, hard reset clears some symptoms but phone is still fundamentally broken, and a new SIM (exchanged at AT&T store prior to leaving) didn't make a bit of difference. Will start warranty return process as soon as I get home. Right now I'm thinking about the Fuze or a BlackJack II.

I am now pretty much convinced that the phone hanging is a new bug that results from a faulty update released by AT&T and is present in all Epix's. The Blackjack II is a great phone but I went with the Fuze and I love it. I just cant do without a touch screen

UPDATE: My first test incoming call after the install had no effect on the phone and eventually went to VM. I pulled the battery, restarted it, and tested an outgoing call; unable to end the call due to unresponsiveness. AWESOME, now doing a hard reset (which I can now do blind folded)

I wish you luck, but I based on experience, you can change 100 phones and they will all act the same. The software and/or hardware are faulty so eventually you will experience the phone hanging during dialing

That used to happen to me too... freeze during a dialing session or when trying to end a call.

Actually T-mobile is also a GSM provider

Hi guandalf,
I have been using epix since dec '08 and have also sufferred from the terrible slog dump issue many times (precisely 8 times). Hearing about the fix, I was about to call the customer rep to get the fix. Luckily I discovered this thread discussing the side effects. To me it seems, it better off living with slog dump issue then to have slow dialing out problem all the time. What's your take on this?
Thanks.

. I truly believe this phone will be phased out very soon. As soon as AT&T realize that the update is not only working, but is causing another major issue. Either this phone will disappear or a new ROM will be released, but I believe the amount of money supporting this phone is costing them cant justify them selling it, especially considering the fact that the phone is subsidized...
yep, i know T-Mobile is a GSM provider, but, at&t is the only GSM 3G provider in town (with a wide 3G footprint).
if it weren't for the 3G speeds i would have stayed with T-Mobile instead of switching to at&t a few years ago. once T-Mobile's 3G footprint improves, then i'll have more choices.

It's a hard question. I personally decided to get rid of my Epix and switch to a Fuze which I now love, as the Epix before and after the update was not working well. The update did make the radio a little better, making calls connect faster and jump a little less between Edge and 3G, but the phone hanging was too much for me to live with. If I were you, I would switch to a completely different phone. I would never go back to the Epix, even if it now worked perfectly, only because I discovered how good of a phone the Fuze is. I was hesitant of no forward facning keyboards due to past experience with the Tilt, but the Fuze is very quick and responsive and I find that I can use its features faster and more efficinetly than the way I used to Epix. Going back to the original question... I would probably not install the update, because the phone hanging used to happen much more frequently than the SLOG DUMPS.

You can try to talk to AT&T and explain that the phone is faulty and hopefully they will exchange it for you for something else. Altenrnatively, you can activate the warranty replacement if you phone keeps hanging. After 3-4 times you will be able to exchnage to a different model
