I have owned my Lumia 920 now since I purchased it 5 days ago. I LOVE it. Best phone I have owned. One thing that is concerning me though is battery life. I will pull it off of its charger or now off of its Qi pad at 6 am and then pocket it for the rest of the day. I have started to notice though that the battery indicates batry care by about 2 PM and then is critcal by 3:30. All in all I am getting 8 to 10 hours consistently.
I undrstand that the phone is far frm borken in and often times batteries need to be conditioned before you get optimal performance, however, I would say anything less than 18 hours is simply unacceptable.
My useage:
Three email accounts. One polling "as sent" and the others once an hour.
About 6 live tiles on the front screen.
I used to use Podcasts on my 900,but I can't even do that now with the non functional WP8 podcast app.
I probably spend a total of 20 minutes surfing the web on y 920.
That is it. Nothing really data intensive or even livestreaming. I acknowledge that the email is intensive, however, I had the same accounts on my 900.
Any thoughts? I'll keep working on trying to condition the battery. With my half a business day of current bttery life, it is spending a lot of time on the charger.

Yep, there are some changes to Windows Phone that take some getting used to.
If you fire up something like maps or nav that use GPS, there is a fairly good chance they will continue to run in the backround sucking up battery.
Tap Settings. Swipe left, Tap background tasks
If an app is running in the background it will be at the top of this list, and you will have the option to tap to terminate it. Otherwise all apps that can run in the background are listed. Tap "allowed" to block the ones you don't want to run in the background, ever.
Once you get the background tasks sorted out, and you remember to kill off background apps that use GPS, your lumia should go all day with tons of battery - I am off charger since 7am and am at 90% battery right now (5:15pm)

Thanks for the info. I have not used Maps or Drive (great apps by the way) so they are not running in the background. It has only been five days, so I'll continue conditioning. Strange though.

Read a few places that this may be related to the NFC settings, try turning those off and see what happens. (I don't have the 920 yet, just passing it on.
)

Hmmm...interesting. Don't the NFC settings have to be on for the 920 to use the Qi charger? I'll try it ot thoough.

Thank You for the link. I am slowy deciding that the problem might be related to Nokia Drive + Beta. I have turned it completely off now and not allowed it to run on the background at all. We'll see how that works today.
For others troubleshooting, when you turn drive + off you cannot select the auto turn back on when activated, or ot will simply turn back on and run in the background then.

If you stop it, it won't continue to run in the background though. It only starts if you start it ![]()
Drive will eat your battery for sure (honestly getting 6+ hours with the GPS on is pretty darn good, but that's another discussion
)

I just don't know why Drive + uses the gps while in background. There must be something else it is tunning in the background.

If you have launched Drive+, it will run until you kill it. With the GPS on. Most likely ditto with Maps.
Just be sure to stop the Drive and Maps apps if you're done using them.

Today with Drive + turned off I got about 5 hours of operational time before the phone turned off. Battery care came on after aout 4 hours of use.

That is not even close to the kind of battery life you should be getting, unless you are in a horrible coverage zone and the phone is seeking for signal constantly.
Take look at Settings -> swipe left to right ->background tasks.
Is there anything at the top that says "These apps are currently running in the background"?
If there are, post those here.

Apps running in background:
Amazing Weather
BBC News Mobile
Drudge Reader
Fox News
That is it. Nokia Drive + Beta is blocked.

Try having no apps running in the background.
If you have normal battery, then add them back one at a time until you find the battery hog. If, for example, amazing weather uses GPS to fix your location every 5 minutes, it will kill your battery.

Yes I have been trying to isolate for a couple of days now. It will take time. Amazing Weather worked great in 7.5. It may not be 8.0 compatible.

The problem is, in 7.X EVERY app suspended when put in the background. Now, in 8.0, EVERY app can be active in the background. In the next few weeks expect apps to get reved to do the right thing in the background but until then I would block all apps from running in the background unless absolutely needed (like Nav)

I'm having the same problems. 7-8 hours and the battery is shot, all background services are blocked and NFC is turned off. I've had it since the 9th and I've let it discharge 5 times and then fully charge and still no better.

Are you in an LTE area? Good coverage? With LiOn batteries there is no need (and in fact its actually bad) to deep cycle the battery.

johninsj I am with you. normally there is no need to deep cycle LiOn batteries, however, there is some sort of either battery or hardware, or perhaps hardware/software interaction issue with the 920. Fantastic phone, but power management is seriously limiting its functionality. Some owners are reporting a series of deep cycling extends the five to eight hour battery life.

If that's the case I'd suspect its a hardware issue with some units. The only thing deep cycling does to LiPo batteries is reduce their lifespan.
