I had originally gone to AT&T to purchase the 920. I noticed that the 820 was there as well but I hadn't heard anything about it. Apparantly neither have most AT&T employees.
After some research, this is what I found:
Nokia 820:
Same processor
Has colorful shells that you can swap out
Does do inductive charging, but you need to get one of the optional shells (makes the phone pretty as well)
Outer shell is made of an impact resistant substance that prevents nicks and dings when dropped.. that's on the Nokia website as well, pretty sweet if you ask me
Softer edges, not hard and sharp like the 920
Has an SD Card Slot to expand memory up to 64Gb (per Nokia website)
Lighter
Just about the same rear camera as the 920, slightly fewer pixels but hardly noticeable
Has the same near field technology
Why buy the Nokia 920?
I'm really not sure...
$50 less and from what I'm finding.. Nokia might be giving out free charging plates anyways through a separate website if you purchased a 920 OR an 820.

I'm happy with my 820, even though AT&T isn't interested in selling them!

Correction: ATT Wireless is apparently not that interested in selling either of these phones.
Sadly, three days into tis launch, it appears to be another dropped ball. No signage in the stores, employees knoww nothing about the phones or even that they were available. Hard to believe, except that this is how they launched the Focus and the Lumia 900. Sad really.

Are you sure you were in a company store and not an authorized dealer? I got mine the first day, half an hour after opening. The authorized dealers seem to be having a harder time getting the phones.
The 820 is a nice phone, but the wireless charging back will cost extra. And I doubt the charging plate will be included. The 820 has a smaller screen and less memory, but has a micro SD slot. It isn't a bad phone at all. But I think the 920 is a little better for the money.

820 vs 920
Screen: 800x480 vs 1280x768 (820 also 4.2" vs 4.5")
front camera: VGA vs 1.2MP
Storage: 8GB vs 32 GB
Integrated wireless charging: No vs Yes
That's what you get for $50
