After reading many reviews and talking to customer service reps I feel they have not been forthcoming about "hidden charges" until I continuously have them confirm pricing. Seems AT&T reps at area stores are to eager to sign you up and they are new and unknowledgable about the product and need other reps to help them. The online chat reps also are not forthcoming unless I repeatedly ask them to confirm pricing. This is sending a red flag!!!! The rep also told me they have optical and brighthouse uses copper wire. I s/w brighthouse and they said not true, they also have optical wire. Thanks for any input...

I don't know what "optical wire" means. Brighthouse is cable TV. U-verse is IPTV.
If you have any questions about U-verse, feel free to ask and one of the knowledge customers on this forum would happy to answer them as best as possible.

I know nothing about Brighthouse, but I wouldn't switch unless you have a good reason. Reasons could be price, channel selection, HD quality, reliability, etc. As already posted, you'll get better answers to your questions about U-Verse right here, so ask away. I switched from Charter because my Charter internet became unreliable, going out almost everyday. I had no complaints with the Charter tv. Now, I'm happy with U-Verse although the internet is slower and more sluggish than Charter. I'll stick with U-Verse until there is a valid reason to change.

I switched to Uverse from DTV mainly because of the price, followed closely by the features that were offered with UV.

Not sure about your question(s).
1. No sales person with any provider will know exactly how much your bill will be, as states, counties and cities will have their own franchise fees and taxes.
2. There aren't that many folks who are complaining about differences between what they signed up for and actual bills, with taxes and fees as most folks are smart enough to understand that is how "cable" TV providers work.
3. There is no such thing as "optical wire." There are "fibre optics." It's simply a different way of delivering the signal. Most providers use fibre at some point before switrching over to copper. Most homes do not have fiber all the way to the home but some do.
4. I've had much better luck with UV CSR's than w/Comcast or Time Warner.
Please do some research and then ask some specific questions. Good Luck.

All Uverse reps are trained to tell you it's "optical" or "fiber" but, I think they are also trained to leave off that 95% of the time it's only "Fiber To The Node (neighborhood)", just like cable.

Well, I think that totally depends:
A "Leading consumer magazine" rated Brighthouse just below ATT Uverse in May 2011, but its odd because that same chart showed Brighthouse rated higher in ALL the individual items like: billing, support, additional fees, cancellation fees, and price after intro period.
I can only assume that means ATTs signal quality, and speeds must be better (more consistent) than brighthouse, but its only an assumption based on the chart.
The best idea is probably to check with your neighbors (on your street if possible, if not your general area), and see what types of performance, challenges they are experiencing with each.
You may be in an OLD cable line run, or ATT area where the equipment has issues. I know we used to have problems with ATT POTS lines getting knocked out because auto accidents on a odd shaped intersection would hit the ATT utility box, untill they finally moved the main distribution panel back

I am very happy with the service. I came to Uverse from DTV and I haven't looked back since. You will get some positive experiences and some negative. That happens with any service provider. YRMV.

I have U-verse and I use a separate router for filtering and for wireless. No problems. The secret is to turn off wireless on the U-verse router and change the base IP-address for the seperate router so that it isn't the same as U-verse.
