Since AT&T's website studiously avoids giving any information on how to file a complaint about AT&T, I am using this forum in the hope that the word will get to whatever office might take an interest in not driving away long-time AT&T customers.
About once a month, I get a call that at least purports to be from AT&T, asking me how my high-speed internet service is working. The calls are ALWAYS in the evening, when I am relaxing with my family. The number it came from tonight shows up on my caller ID as 877-***-****. Tonight it was at 8:37 p.m.
If I ever get so lonely and bored in the evening that I look forward to getting a call from AT&T, I will let AT&T know. Until then, I would love to see an end to these obnoxious calls.
I chewed out the person who called tonight, and told her to put me on the "do not call" list, but I would have liked to have a way to confirm that in writing to AT&T (particularly since, if the calls really ARE coming from AT&T, the callers are not the folks who decided on this dim-witted policy of bothering customers in the evening).
Part of me hopes this is a campaign by one of AT&T's competitors, to make me so irritated with AT&T that I will switch to another carrier. It may well work.

The caller CLAIMS it's not a marketing call.

Did you Google the number to see if you can find any information about whether it is actually a call from AT&T? I've never heard of any one else receiving calls just to make sure their service is working. Have you had problems with your AT&T service in the past that may cause them concern about whether your service would be working?

Go to http://whocallsme.com/ plug in the 877 number and see if it reveals any information.

As for chewing the person on the phone out for calling you, I bet that you are lovely person to be around. They are doing their job, and do not know you from Adam, so maybe next time just be nice, and courteously tell them that you wish no further contact regarding sales inquiries.
"Ren: Now listen, Cadet. I've got a job for you. See this button? Don't touch it! It's the History Eraser button, you fool!
Stimpy: So what'll happen?
Ren: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?"

Most marketers and up-sellers, which this seems to be, know most folks are not home at 1 PM. So, they call in the evening. Not illegal but quite rude. At any rate, if you are really serious about seeing if you have made it to an internal "do not call list," is to send a private message to the escalation team at AT&T Customer Care, and someone will get in touch with you.
I feel for you. Our local CVS would "robocall" us at least twice a week with important (not) prescription info. I changed the account phone number to my cell and for whatever reason, the calls have been reduced to important ones, maybe once a month.

I also received a call from ATT asking if all of my services were working properly. I did not like getting the call. I said yes and hung up. I hope they don't call again.

Again if you are an AT&T (or Nationwide insurance, ADT security, etc) customer it's a chance to upsell and not illegal. Maybe you should talk with your state's AG and ask to change your state's do not call list. It's all about profit and AT&T is not a "not for profit," last time I checked.
