Red x of death every update

3 years straight when they do a major software update my box dies(No coming back from the dead) red x with 2 grey dots under it. The tech person who came out last year said the box for my neighborhood has a issue and it is not transfering the update correctly to my box creating a software issue that can not be fixed without me just getting a new box and that the next update they have I will probably need another box again. So on Monday they had a update and my box is dead again and all my recordings will be gone again!!

Anyone else having this issue and know of a way to block updates? ATT said there is no way to block the update I would at least want a warning so I can watch all the shows I have recorded before it hits.
