Pardon me while a vent a little. We've had all the same problems as many of you with our U-verse system, especially the dvr. We are on our fourth (yes, fourth) Motorola dvr. The other day we lost all our recordings (my wife is NOT happy about this). I called and the guy said they were going to send us the "new high-capacity model". I asked if that was the Cisco dvr we've heard about (my son got his Motorola model replaced with the Cisco unit) and he said, "yes". The box arrived today and of course it was the same Motorola VIP-1225 that we already have. I just spent the better part of two hours on the phone telling them that they shipped the wrong unit and them telling me that you can only replace a dvr with the same model you already have. That's their "policy". Anyway, tomorrow a tech rep is supposed to show up to review our problem. I told the agent on the phone that if he isn't carrying a Cisco dvr that he needn't bother coming, which she supposedly put in the notes on our account. Every time these guys come to our home, they tell us that the last guy that was here didn't tighten the connectors in the attic or some similar excuse. As soon as they leave, it's apparent that they fixed nothing. The agent on the phone also told me that if they have to replace any wiring, etc., that I would be charged $99. I told her that I was not going to pay a cent to fix their problem-riddled system, and if they expected that I would pay, they could take the whole system out of my home. I hope we don't have to go that far, because we do like the features of the U-verse system when it works. I'm spending over $150 per month and this is very frustrating. Life is really too short to have to deal with this kind of ineptitude and defective equipment. OK, done venting - think I'll go have a single-malt scotch and relax...

Scotch, yeccch. Rum and Coke, works for me.
At any rate, sorry that you are having issues. As far as I know (AFAIK), Motorola market subscribers can't get Cisco equipment and vice versa. There are two Moto models, one a standard sized HD and one a larger HD unit. I am happy with my larger HD Moto unit that I actually got because of constant issues. I will say that DVR's do not fail that regularly for you to be on your fourth one. Most likely, There is something major league haywire in your installation. I would try contacting Alex, one of the AT&T Community Managers and request that this gets a remedy as soon as possible, and to your satisfaction (even if that means credits and or the biggest DVR for your area).
Welcome! Don't be a stranger on the forums.

Cisco won't save you. After a couple of days screwing around I finally received my DVR replacement. My old unit was a Cisco as was the new unit. They were probably made at the same plant at the same time as they both have one commonality......neither one works. A tech is supposedly coming in the morning to 'fix' the problem. Hope he brings a supply of DVR's.

1) Both the Cisco and the Motorola devices (except the newer ones) are based upon a design by Sigma Designs. They, for the most part, are the same device. There could be quality control improvements or heat disapation differences and they don't look alike, but they're much more alike than different.
2) A lot of the problems people have with DVR's are caused by:
a) unclean power,
b) errors in the network between the VRAD and the DVR (on one or the other side of the RG),
c) overheating, or
d) [rarely] IR inteference.

In 3 years I've only had issues with one DVR and that was a week after my first install. After that they've all been rock solid, knock on wood.

I'm still working w/my originally installed Vip 1216 Moto from more than 4 years ago w/nary a problem. I'd tend to think one of JefferMc's reasons are the cause of your problems bill750.
