When U-Verse customers complain about the inability to download shows recorded on their DVR to their laptops/tablets/smartphones OR how the uverse.com only has outdated shows to watch, the U-Verse social media manager typically says something like "That's a good idea Paul" or "we can't do that due to copywrite issues" OR "we can't speak to future functionality of our services". Pretty frustrating. If it's a copywrite issue, how does Tivo have the ability to download from the DVR to a laptop, or Direct TV have the live streaming Audience Network or Dish Network have the the Hopper. I love U-Verse, but in this one area you are way behind and the lack of serious response to your customers is insulting. How about a real answer to the following: 1. When will you allow people to take their DVR on the road and use it over other internet providers? 2. When will you create a software version of the tuner that allows a laptop to be a live tuner/dvr? 3. When will you create an application (PC, Tablet, Smartphone, or web) that will allow access to and downloading from my DVR? 4. When will you update your uverse.com to offer fresh content that can be viewed or downloaded? Obviously, many of these items overlap and could meet the same need. The main goal is to (1) watch TV live when not at home and (2) download recorded shows to be able to watch then in a disconnected state from the internet.

They can't legally allow you to do what Tivo is illegally doing if allowing digital shows to be downloaded to a computer that can then be torrented to the whole world.
Also, you can't copy anything that Tivo does, they will sue, they already did sue ATT on Recorded Series.
DRM stops all recording to authorized units only, the provider's DVR/PVR, no point past that. ![]()

Ace.. I am not sure I understand your response. I am confident Tivo is not breaking the law or someone would have shut them down my now and Tivo can't copy write the ability to transfer a recording to a latop..only the technology that they use to accomplish the task. Companies compete all the time....it seems AT&T is not competing welll with Tivo to me.

No, AT&T is not competing with Tivo just as other providers' DVR's do not compete with Tivo. They really have no reason to compete with Tivo. Also, the newer Tivo's are not compatible with U-verse.

Just the regulars telling you you don't deserve better. Very happy with this service but anyone who expects more gets put in their place by the regulars.

"Put in your place"? What exactly does that mean? A question was asked (can we transfer shows off the AT&T U-Verse DVR) and then was answered (no, you can't).
You seem to think that when the correct answer isn't something you want to hear that you can then just blame the people who answered your question as if it's their fault. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
None of us work for AT&T. None of us are in the strategy meetings to determine what features will be added. None of us are in the lab building the DVR or programming the software. What do you want us to do about this missing feature you think you're entitled to? Wave a magic wand and make it appear in your living room?

The question was not can I copy shows from their DVR. The question was when will they have the ability to copy shows from their DVR and/or have an internet site that allows the download of shows within a short period of air time. The process is called consumer feedback and hopefully resulting product development. I look forward to an official response from AT&T. Please don't hijack my thread with further disrespectful remarks to fellow forum users.

Then you will likely be disappointed. This is not official communication vehicle for AT&T. To quote the Community Guidelines:

Which provider currently fulfills all of the above requests? Whoever it is, I would recommend that the OP change their service to them.

Then if they can't be transferred AT&T should have some type of back-up in their system to prevent what I see from this board is a continuing problem of losing shows. As the man said, the regulars will jump all over you if you can't say something nice. Are all of you guys shills for AT&T. I have lost about 15 football games plus other assorted programs. If I wanted to erase all of my recordings I could just not record anything instead. Talk about thin skin

It looks like your DVR is in the early stages of failure. Call TS using the phone number in my sig and let the CSR know what is going on with your DVR. They will either send you out a new one or send a tech to your house to replace your existing one.

I agree with RCSMG. I have had U-Verse for over 4 years and have never spontaneously lost any recordings. If your DVR is routinely doing this, it is defective and needs to be replaced.
Please call technical support and explain to them what is going on, and ask that they replace your DVR. They can ship you a new one for self-install, or you can have a technician come out to replace it for you (they may charge you for this option).

In the Lounge subforum, long time poster Kong57 was told some info (of the we shall see variety) indicating that U-Verse will be soon "moving to the cloud." I wonder of that means DVR programs too? I wonder if it could work like Spotify, where it would store programs in the cloud?

I think that's exactly what Kong57 meant. Cablevision advertised, and maybe tested, but I don't think ever fully released such a system quite a few years ago.

I actually think that it's a brilliant idea. In fact, why not a hybrid system? Some programs in the cloud and others on the DVR. 20% of the shows are going to be the 80% that are most watched, by subscribers. So instead of tying up everyones's DVR with the latest Parks and Recreation episode, keep it in the cloud and keep lesser watched shows, like a House rerun from 4 years ago that recently aired on an independent channel, on the DVR's HD. The customer will never know if it is a cloud program or a DVR one.. BTW - I don;t watch Parks or House, lol.

Yes, but... you'd increase the load on the distribution network dramatically. Instead of multicasting one copy of each program througout the network once, for each DVR to record at once, you'd have each user getting his own copy of the program via unicast when he goes to watch it. Assuming one play of the recording, it wouldn't change the utilization of the path between the VRAD and the home, but the the path between the VHO and the VRAD would have to handle a substantial increase in traffic.

I was coming back to edit as I had a brain freeze (or word filter violation, lol). I forgot about local advertisers and such. Oh well, it works for Spotify. ![]()
