The steps that beebeesa provided are correct if you want to connect your iPad to your home Wi-Fi network with your U-verse internet service. However when you say "add wireless" to your iPad, do you mean a mobile internet connection like 4G LTE? If so, Apple sells two different models for the iPad (and iPad Mini) one model is Wi-Fi only and the other is Wi-Fi and Cellular. The Wi-Fi and Cellular model uses AT&T's 4G LTE connection to make internet available whenever you're away from home. Here's a screenshot from Apple's website that has more info.

Verify Wi-Fi is enabled and that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.
1.Tap Settings - Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on by tapping the on/off icon.
2. Available Wi-Fi networks appears under "Choose a Network..."
3. Locate and tap the Wi-Fi network you want to join
