C'mon down, LOL! Or head to SanFran, which I think is where Sees started. A co-worker who lived there years ago brought some back to us once, how I became addicted.

Well........I'm a Russell Stovers fan. Have been for many years. Favorite is their Rasberry Parfait. A creamy rasberry flavored center covered with dark chocolate. I rarely buy them anymore because I can't eat just one.
Poor Alfie. He couldn't find a place in the house where he could hide from the firecrackers going off in the neighborhood. It will be worse tomorrow. I did manage to get him outside to do his jobs but that took only about 60 seconds and then he bolted for the front door. Here in hicksville we have a 3 day period when they can shoot them. I'll probably be up on my roof on Monday picking up the bottle rocket and buzz bomb carcuses. It's raining tonight. Hopefully it'll rain tomorrow....all day I pray. Quite a few of the commercial displays were canceled this year because of shortage of funds from cities and contributors.
Got a question of the technically astute among you. Got a call from Kansas City Power and Light Company. For $4.94 per month they will install a whole house surge protector next to our meter. Along with that fee comes a promise to pay up to $750 to help replace any damaged appliances or electronic devices if a surge should get through the suppressor. I have not said yes yet. In my entire life I have had only one incident when a TV set's power supply was blown out by a voltage spike from nearby lightning. ALSO....I thought the power company already has surge and spike suppressors installed on the main lines. AND....I think our household insurance covers damage from electrical storms. Also....all of our neighborhood lines are buried. No above ground lines anywhere near us. I'm considering turning down the extra cost for one of these household protectors.
Now the question....basically....what do you folks think?

At first glace I thought go for it, then I figured up th yearly cost of $60 by rounding up to $5/month because I figure there is tax on the $4.94. Over a five year period of 5 years that's $300. For a little more up front you can buy good UPS that have a battery backup and protect you from surges from other parts of the house. The protector may not be a bad idea if you pay to have it installed yourself for a one time charge but you still need individual protection for expensive TVs and computers.
Since your service is mostly underground do you ever get flickers or bumps like when someone hits a telephone pole? Those bumps take their toll on electronics that a UPS prevents.

Phil, can offer some input on lightening/houses with overhead wiring but not sure what protection in place with underground lines. Years ago house I was living at took almost direct hit from a lightening strike. Not sure whether the strike came down the electric line or hit the house and followed main lines out. Transformers on poles have large fuse/breaker that can handle some big surges and shorts. The whole transformer near my house was completely fried by lightening which is just just too fast/powerful to stop. It immediately took out my submersible pump in my well and blew the face off of my alarm clock. Didn't seem like other electronics were damaged but then they started going out slowly over 2-3 months. TV went out, then elec. hot water tank, couple electronic components, etc.. This made it very difficult to claim on insurance.
When the power is turned back on after any power outage a surge is the first thing that comes down the line. I can see why your power company would want to offer this protection. Besides making money they are also somewhat protecting themselves. Think their $750 replacement is way too low with costs of electronics and appliances today. Know you also have some very high quality electronics and they may just reimburse you for the costs you paid. Know that's why I pay more for replacement costs on my insurance instead of costs actually paid. Never forget years ago when friend and me both bought Dual turntables with a special of getting a Shure cartridge/stylus for 1 cent. His was taken and yep, insurance gave him a penny for his cartridge. May also be a bickering problem between electric company and insurance on who is responsible for what.
Believe I would be looking elsewhere for whole house surge supression to protect all of your priceless electronics and everthing else in your home that runs off electricity. May be worth the costs to set your mind at ease.
What the hey, it's only some more cross-country road trips driving all those neat cars..

Thanks for the opinions. I forgot to mention that I have individual surge/spike protectors on all our electronic equipment in the house.
Not only is our neighborhood all underground wiring but nearly the entire south side of our town has buried lines. I imagine I could drive anywhere within a mile and not see a power or telephone pole....all underground lines with transformers ground mounted and covered with metal cases. Normally I believe the biggest local source of spikes would be AC/heat pumps kicking on/off. Of course phone lines are also all buried all the way to the VRAD and beyond that the fiber optic cables are buried.

Kansas City Power and Light Company called back yesterday and I turned them down on the whole house surge protection. Even the guy who called admitted that, in our location with all power lines buried, our risk was minimal. I know.....it's only $60 per year. But those little items soon add up.
Got the UV upgrade this morning.....strangely not during the night but rather it occurred around 7:45 AM. A few little tweaks seem nice but most of the new features won't affect us much. I posted more on this in the THDVR section.

Oh no. His ego is already as big as we can stand.![]()
All the firecrackers exploding on the 3rd, 4th and 5th made him a basket case. He got off his feed and furthermore we could not get him to stay outside very long. No walks at all. His appetite sagged. He would wait until he just could not hold it any longer before he'd ask to go out. Yesterday, on the 9th, he finally seemed to feel better. He got me up at 8 AM and we went for a mile long walk. He ate a good meal at supper time. Hopefully we're back to normal.....until next year.
Found some video cassettes from the 80's amongst my "stuff". Footage of friends, children, grandchildren and our travels. Remember those early camcorders? The Sony I shot these with was HUGE. The recorder hung by a strap over my shoulder and the camera balanced on my other shoulder. It was heavy and awkward. I distinctly remember the day I decided that video "movies" were not for me. It was a warm day and we were hiking around various spots in Big Bend National Park.....that camcorder hanging on both shoulders.... plus my rather heavy Konica SLR dangling from my neck. It had an F 2.8 zoom lens on it....a lot of heavy glass. I made the decision that I preferred to speciaize in still images. So we no longer own a camcorder.
Wow....so far....this UV upgrade has sure gone smoothly. We've received the main download plus several patches.....one just a few minutes ago and now another one scheduled for 6:30:40 AM later this morning. I've noticed that the Memory Load has dramatically dropped on all boxes. On the DVR it is down to 71%. It used to run between 85 to 95%. Allocated physical memory has increased to just over 11 mb. It used to be just 7 or 8 mb. I don't know how that came about without physically adding memory to the boxes.
Got company coming later today....brother-in-law and his wife.....so I think I'll go crawl into the sack. Gonna be a busy weekend. Everyone have a good one.
Phil

Was that one of those that took a full-sized VHS tape in the camcorder? And the battery was huge and on a cord, had to stay plugged into the wall, so you were limited to distance to film.
Seems the only problems some are seeing is with the new iPhone WebRemote App; I've got some issues, but I can always just go online at the old site if I have to.
Did find out that apparently this update effected Home Manager, and they weren't expecting it.

Usually only had to charge it once for each day's use. But......Oh-boy was it heavy. Whew!
