Before the installer arrives tomorrow... do I need to have a sacrificial laptop (or VMware instance running full-screen to make it look like it's running for real) so I can humor him and let him install any official junkware that AT&T might force me to to install in order to activate my service (the way Comcast did), then blow it away 12 seconds after he walks out the door? Or can I just politely lie, claim every computer in the house runs Linux, power up the 3801, connect my laptop to one of the 3801's ethernet jacks, let DHCP assign an address, open its local admin page in Chrome, and do any additional configuration necessary to provision the 3801 or service from there?

I did the self-install and I didn't have to install any software to get activated...
I did have to go to an AT&T web page and I think it did require javascript, but that was about the extent of it. I do remember that the web based access to the voice mail for U-Verse voice does seem to require IE to work, as it wouldn't run with my FireFox when I trioed to use it (it also wouldn't run with any of the browsers on my Mac).

I had my first install in 2007 and a RG replacement in 2011 and the technicians never offered to install any software or indicated it was required. They did ask us to confirm that each PC (hard wired) and laptop (wireless) were able to connect to the RG and access the internet. To be clear this was for Windows Operating Systems.

There is nothing to "install" I've had 3 installations and not one bit of software was installed on any computer.

Yep, I can confirm that I didn't have to install anything to get it to work. The installer wanted me to connect via wi-fi, but I declined (my own wlan is 100% greenfield 802.11N, and it seemed silly to waste time configuring something I'm just going to disable anyway), and when I conncted the ethernet cable directly, everything "just worked". The installer's jaw actually dropped when he saw that I got it working while he was out getting something from the truck. ;-)
