AT&T won't allow self-install

Just tried to order the 12mbps Uverse internet-only package and the $150 install fee appeared, with no way to opt out. Talked to a rep and he said that "the install is too complex" and a tech visit is required (of course...how else can they collect an extra $150?). I don't need Uverse that bad... Tom

Update - spoke to a phone rep about my concerns and discussed the technical aspects. Evidently the tech visit is required for outside equipment configuration work. Since I currently have ATT DSL and land line service, they offered a bundle including phone service and reduced the fees from $250 to $150, plus offered a $100 gift card rebate. Fair enough.

This just keeps getting better...now AT&T tells me that the promotional prices are good only for new customers and I have to pay full rates for everything. They said that even though I was quoted the discounts and received an order confirm, AT&T would not have ultimately honored them. Nice way to do business - you get a different story from everyone you talk to. I canceled the order. Tom

If you are still interested in you send Alex a PM he is an ATT Community Manager on the forum. He can get you to the correct people/dept. to get issues like that resolved.

That's because it is a VDSL installation that can not be customer installed at any time as with an ADSL installation.

VDSL can be allowed for self-install if it is Internet-only and close enough.

He's ordering Internet only, so I assume they're requiring a technician install probably because he's going to need an iNID.

You have to order the TV part to get a free install.

That's a new one on me, thought all VDSL installs needed a tech, as VDSL is a bit more finicky than ADSL. Maybe the reason we are seeing more no sync/signal on more self installs? Is ATT cutting corners on this?

Yes, they can self-install VDSL under the following conditions:

- Internet only, no VOIP or IPTV
- 2Wire 3600 only
- Close enough to VRAD that pair-bonding is not required
- 12Mbps Internet package or lower
- They will be placed on the 13.2/1.5 profile

If they don't meet all those requirements, it will be a technician install @ $150. Install fee can be waived only by upgrading to Internet + IPTV.

No. The 3800HGV-B is not sold by AT&T and remains their property. Any 3800HGV-B that you see for sale on the internet is equipment that was never returned to AT&T when service was terminated. This equipment cannot be activated on your U-verse account.
