dnsmasq & bad name at /var/etc/hosts.dyn

Anyone have an idea what this error message is for in my NVG589?   It fulled my diagnostic log completely in 5 hours.

Hi @Tex_2014,

Sorry about the issues. Sadly, the error does not give us too much information besides the fact that one of the dnsmasq entries is invalid. It could be an issue with the DNS being forwarded or a call to one of your local devices that is having issues. It should not be too much of a problem, but I would try factory resetting the router by logging into the router and going to the resets page under diagnostics and choose reset device.

Hope this helps.

Performed the reset and still have the

2014-11-16T20:48:16-05:00 L3 dnsmasq[1082]: bad name at /var/etc/hosts.dyn line 1

filling the log up in 3 hours.  We do not notice any performance issues, just would like to view the log back more the 3 hours do to previous issues (rg resets [fixed with neighborhood switch replacement).

I too am getting zillions of these DNSMASQ errors, so the density of usefull error messages in the log is very low. I'k on my third NVG589 in four weeks and they all generate these messages. I realize DNSMASQ is open source (free) software but can't someone at AT&T or Motorola take some initiative to find the source of these errors in your code tree and fix it already!

I'm getting these errors also in addition to losing the TV signal intermittently.  Often the interruption is so short so there is no visible interruption in service.  If this happens during the recording of a program, you can see intermittent brief segments when the recording misses a section of the program.

This problem needs to be addressed by AT&T!

nbrookwood is right. AT&T or Motorola needs to make their network run better by lending credence to reports such as this from their customers.

These messages do fill up the (rather limited) system log file making it difficult to see anything else that may be happening.

I am also seeing my log fill with these messages.

Thank you -

I wonder if the lame DNS server at 99.99.99.153 has any relation to the hosts.dyn errors . . .

No.  I've read that the bad names in /var/etc/hosts.dyn are invalid entries in a configuraiton file baked into the firmware, though I'm not 100% convinced of that.  The DNS host at 99.99.99.153 is probably not responding due to a communications issue between your Residential Gateway and the AT&T network, not through any perambulational disability.  And I do hold out the possibility that the entries in hosts.dyn are being called invalid because the RG can't verify them with the DNS host.

I'm also seeing this problem. Are there any updates? Do any developers follow these forum posts?

Best regards,

Hmmm... I just saw this:

Is this interesting to anyone? 🙂

The System Information panel on my NVG589 shows a software version of 9.1.0h12d22.

The latest version at http://sourceforge.net/projects/nvg589.arris/files/ is version 9.1.1h0

Is anyone brave enough to see if they can upgrade their residential gateway? 😛
